DO NOW You have ten minutes to finish up the graphing assessment from yesterday. I will call you by name to receive your packet. If you are done before the ten minutes is up… start reading in the text on pg 135
2
RNA The Other Nucleic Acid
3
DNA: Review Double stranded molecule Nucleotides = monomer
base, phosphate, and deoxyribose Follows the base pair rule A and T C and G Contains the instruction manual for an organisms traits Contained in the nucleus of a cell
4
Genes Code within DNA for the traits of the organism
Sequence of bases on DNA One gene = one protein… proteins determine traits Different proteins are determined by the different sequences of bases Ex/ CATCAT = purple hair, TACTAC = yellow hair
5
An analogy… Think of the BASES as LETTERS LETTERS form WORDS (genes)
WORDS form SENTENCES (the traits of an organism) Endless combinations to form all living variations
6
DNA cannot do it alone! DNA trapped in the nucleus…
Needs help getting the code out of the DNA and create protein RNA to the rescue!
7
RNA Ribonucleic Acid Single stranded Nucleotides = monomers
Base (A, C, G, U), phosphate, ribose Follows base pair rule, except no thymine… uses URACIL instead DNA: A T A G C G RNA:
8
Function of RNA Carry and translate the message (code) in the DNA to make proteins 2 Types of RNA needed mRNA Messenger RNA: gets the code out of the nucleus tRNA Transfer RNA: translates the code into a protein
9
RNA vs. DNA structure
10
Amoeba Sisters: DNA vs. RNA
