Learning aims and objectives
Have an understanding of the unit and what you will be doing Begin to consider the different qualities and characteristics of sports leaders Relate the different qualities and characteristics to their importance for a sports leader Provide examples and discuss some of the qualities and characteristics of these leaders In doing this we could also Identify some of the roles of a sports leader You may be able to Provide examples of different leaders, comparing how they demonstrate the different qualities and characteristics

Know the skills, qualities and responsibilities associated with successful sports leadership Be able to plan and lead an activity session Be able to review their planning and leadership of a sports activity Be able to assist in the planning and leading of a sports event Be able to review your planning and leadership of a sports event.

What will you do? Debate 2 sports leaders discussing the skills, qualities and responsibilities Produced a plan and relevant resources for delivery of a sports session Produce a written report which evaluates the session and personal performance.

Why are these good leaders? Why are these poor leaders? Are they similar / different in any way? What responsibilities do some of these leaders have?

Task – Group work Select a sports leader – either a personal coach / leader or a famous coach you have observed. What are their skills and qualities Why do you think this? Can you support what you have said with an example? Can you list / name what they are responsible for?

Communication: A way to exchange information
Who might a sports coach / leader need to communicate with? Athletes, parents, teachers, other coaches, spectators, managers, first aid, physio, media, public, officials, other staff. How many different types of communication can you think of? What types of communication are there?

Communication A coach also needs to know communication is a two way skill. Listening and receiving information is extremely important. Listening skills: Eye contact, concentrate, don’t interrupt, ask questions Do you know any sports coaches that are good communicators? Why?

Debate Working in small groups you are required to choose a sports leader of your choice. Create a small report / spider / venn diagram which justifies why you feel they are a good coach focusing on their strengths, achievements, abilities, skills and qualities etc... You must provide examples to justify your argument and be able to pose questions to the opposition surrounding their views on their chosen coach.
