Environmental Protection
Working inter-departmentally, Within public and private sectors, To balance… Societal Needs Environmental Protection Economic Vitality And help sustain a high quality of life in Summit County

Sustainability - 2016 Accomplishments
Implemented Climate Action Plan that resulted in: Reduction of County’s carbon footprint; and Countywide greenhouse gas emissions trending downward. Ranked in top 5 for Georgetown University Energy Prize Competition (approx. 60,000 LEDs Switched). Installed over 750 kW solar PV on 105 residential rooftops.* Created and implemented Home Energy Score pilot program to encourage residential weatherization countywide Added (2) EVs, EV chargers, and CNG vehicles to County Fleet. Completed (2) technical feasibility studies: Community Choice Aggregation/Renewable Energy and County Solar PV Capacity. Instituted new Fleet Vehicle Policy and new High Performance Building Standards policy for County. Continued participation in Congressional Public Lands Initiative. Facilitated NEPA actions on public lands. Managed open space.

Sustainability – 2017 Goals
Continue leadership in reduction of County’s carbon footprint. Re-engage community partners to implement Climate Action Plan. Utilize solar PV study results to acquire renewable energy for County facilities. Pursue Community Choice Renewable Energy for residents. Develop and implement strategic education and outreach plan to: Increase energy efficiency in all sectors (residential, commercial, municipal) Inspire Above-Energy-Code construction Encourage use of renewable energy Reduce idling; Increase carpooling Complete (2) NEPA actions Sheepgrazing Analysis in Unitas Ashley Forest Management Plan

2016 Budget includes $150,000 CCA/RE Study and $50,000 Solar Study 2017 Dept. Request includes $50,000 to continue pursuit of CCA/RE and $78,950 in grant funds and $27,000 for EV chargers
