The extract (on the learning space) is taken from chapter 1 of The Castle of Otranto, a novel that has come to be seen as the originator of later Gothic texts.
Read and annotate the extract together. What sorts of features can you see that follow (or, indeed, initiate) the early Gothic Genre?
