5 Fiction Books Fiction books are arranged alphabetically by author last name The spine label of each book will have the letter F on it, followed by the first three letters of the author’s last name E.g. F SED

6 Non-Fiction Books Non-fiction books are organised using the Dewey Decimal System Each book has a subject number followed by the first three letters of the author’s last name E.g WOF

7 What do the numbers mean on non-fiction books?
The Dewey Decimal System organises knowledge by numbers from 0 to by hundreds with subdivisions Each number represents a subject or part of a subject Thus, all books about reptiles, for example, will be together on the shelf – 567.9

8 Major Dewey Classifications
000 – General Works 100 – Philosophy and Psychology 200 – Religion 300 – Social Sciences 400 – Language 500 – Natural Sciences and Mathematics 600 – Applied Sciences 700 – Arts/Recreation 800 – Literature 900 – Geography and History

970 – General History of North America 973 – United States 973.9 – – Kennedy Of Kennedys and Kings – Making Sense of the Sixties by Harris Wofford

10 Graphic Novels Graphic novels are arranged alphabetically by author
The spine label of fictional graphic novels will have the letters, GNOV, followed by the first three letters of the author’s last name E.g. GNOV GAI The spine label of non-fictional graphic novels will have the letters, GNOV, followed by a Dewey Decimal System indicator E.g. GNOV MIL

11 Reference Books Reference books cannot be taken out of the library
Each book has an Upper Case R, followed by a Dewey number, and the first three letters of the author’s last name E.g. R 910 ENC V.3

12 French Books Each book in the French collection has a fleur-de-lis sticker

13 Videos/DVDs Students may sign out videos and DVDs for seven days

14 HIP – Library Catalogue
Go to rbh.hdsb.ca Click on “Library” on the left Click on “HIP” at the top Search!

15 Photo ID You need photo identification to borrow a library item
Do not borrow books for your friends on your library account (you will be responsible for any fines or lost items)

16 Borrowing Items Take the item(s) to the circulation desk, present photo identification to the librarian, and your items will be scanned into the computer Remember to bring books back in two weeks and videos/DVDs in one week We allow you to borrow 5 books at a time and only 3 graphic novels at a time

17 Fines Every item has a due date stamped at the back
If you return a book late, it will cost you 25 cents a day up to a maximum of $5 per item It’s free to renew!

Your teacher-librarian is available to help you find print resources, search online databases effectively, help you with essays, and support you in all your information gathering needs, so make sure you ask for help when needed!
