Why Use NLWs F o r c e C o n t i n u u m
MILITARY PRESENCE LETHAL FORCE Non-Lethal Options F o r c e C o n t i n u u m Deter Dissuade Defeat Not all situations require lethal force and some may not even allow lethal force to be used; like HA/DR, which is usually incompatible with the use of deadly force. In some situations, like HA/DR events, presence alone of uniformed personnel will stop unwanted activities, like looting. Sometimes more persuasion is needed, and sometimes nothing short of lethal force will work. But what options do you have between military presence and lethal force? That fuzzy area in the middle, where options are vague and results can be catastrophic, is what we’ll focus on over the next 2.5 days

Objectives of NOLES 16 Bi-lateral training to exchange NLW tactics to maintain order in low-intensity scenarios involving civilians Demonstrate current NLWs and educate participating countries on NLW employment tactics and current and future NLW capabilities Discuss the topic of the Law of Armed Conflict and how it applies during periods of civil unrest and the proper role of the military in these situations Seek new ways to handle unrest in order to prevent or stop human rights violations Promote the use of NLW in operations
