SMART S= Specific M= Measurable A= Attainable R= Results-Oriented T= Time- Bound

Specific Specific and Strategic. In this sense, “specific” relates to clarity. “Strategic” relates to alignment with our mission and vision. Which statement has more clarity? 1. We will help all kids learn. 2. We will increase the Reading Comprehensive state test score.

Measurable In most cases this means quantifiable.
Which statement is quantified? We will increase the Reading Comprehensive state test scores. We will increase the Reading Comprehensive state test scores by 35%.

Attainable People must believe, based on past data and current capabilities that success is realistic. Which statement do you believe in attainable within 1 year? 100% of our 3rd grade students will score a 4 on the Reading Comprehensive state test. 75% of our 3rd grade students will score at a 3 or 4 on the Reading Comprehensive state test.

Results- Oriented This means focusing on the outcome, not the process for getting there. This refers to our desired end result, versus inputs to the process. Do you believe? Our 3rd grade students will increase their average score by 40% as measured by the Reading Comprehensive state test.

Time-Bound When will the goal be accomplished?
75% of our 3rd grade students will score a 3 or 4 on the Reading Comprehensive state test by the end of school year.

Am I a SMART? Students will show one year of growth as measured by the End of Grade Test. During the school year, 90% of all 7th grade students will score a level 3 or above as measured by the End of Grade Science Test.

Am I SMART? Students will demonstrate responsible behavior and effective citizenship. 95% of 10th graders tested will score at or above the grade level. At least 95% of all 3rd grade students will successfully read at or above grade level by the end of 2015.

Foundation Questions for Content Professional Learning Communities
What do we want our students to learn? How will we know when they have learned it? What do we do if they have not mastered it? What will we do when they know it? Evidence of Mastery How will you assess the knowledge of your students and ensure that they have met the mastery goal? What will you do for those students who have NOT mastered the goal? Once students have mastered the goal, what will their next steps be? What artifacts will you collect to ensure mastery?
