3 Blood 10 Science

4 Kaupapa / Learning Outcome
To know the components of blood and their function.

5 What is in your blood? If we spun a tube of blood in a centrifuge it would look like this

6 Blood Our blood is made of four components
Plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells

7 Plasma

8 Plasma The blood cells and platelets are suspended in a substance called plasma. Plasma is made up of: 90% water inorganic salts glucose antibodies urea and other waste products plasma proteins. A centrifuge spins the blood very fast, so that the heavier cells are forced to the bottom of the test tube leaving the plasma. plasma

9 Platelets

10 Platelets Formed in red bone marrow.
Produce thrombokinase – a chemical needed for blood clotting. Platelets help to repair tissues and close wounds both internally and externally. When needed, they grow into irregular shapes and stick together to form a plug over the wound. Platelets are important in healing injuries. Extension activity – discuss haemophilia.

11 Blood Clotting

12 Red Blood Cells

13 Red blood cells Also called erythrocytes. Disc-shaped.
Made in the bone marrow. Contain a red-coloured compound called haemoglobin which bonds with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin. Transport oxygen to the tissues. Emphasise the role of red blood cells as oxygen carriers. This is vital in supporting muscles during exercise. 1 mm3 of blood contains over 5 million red blood cells. Link to diet – low blood cell count is known as anaemia – makes you breathless and lacking energy. Lack of iron (haem – haemoglobin) can cause anaemia. Anaemia can be prevented by eating foods rich in iron, e.g., spinach, or taking iron supplements.

14 White Blood Cell

15 White blood cells Also called leucocytes.
They are bigger than red blood cells and have large nuclei. Act as the body’s defence system. Some white blood cells surround and consume harmful microbes. Some produce chemicals called antibodies that fight infection. White blood cells are less directly linked to sports performance than red cells. However, they are vital to health and preventing infection after injury.

16 Task Write a few sentences explaining how each of the important each of the four components of blood are useful to sports performance.
