Blood Vessels: Capillaries, Arteries, Veins
Circulatory System Blood Vessels: Capillaries, Arteries, Veins
2
Pathways of the blood
3
Capillaries Capillary walls are only 1 cell wide.
Body cells switch nutrients/waste and 02/CO2. Substances exchange through the process of diffusion.
4
Artery Carry blood away from the heart.
Carry oxygen and nutrients to the body. Lined with smooth muscle to keep blood moving.
5
Veins Carry blood to the heart. Carry CO2 and waste out of cells.
Contain valves to keep blood from flowing backward.
6
Pathways De-oxygenated blood goes into the right ventricle
De-oxygenated blood enters the right atrium De-oxygenated blood goes into the right ventricle De-oxygenated blood goes to lungs to get rid of CO2 and pick up O2 Oxygenated blood goes into left atrium Oxygenated blood travels to the left ventricle Oxygenated blood travels throughout the body to the become de-oxygenated and then do the whole thing all over
7
Blood Contents Plasma is 55% of blood.
90% water (a river for blood cells) 10% nutrients and waste Proteins, fats, glucose, waste, carbon dioxide, minerals, vitamins Blood Cells make up the other 45% Red Blood Cells White Blood Cells Platelets
8
Structure and Function
The ventricles are the main force to pump blood through the body. The structure of blood vessels (like roadways) allows them to do their function of transporting material all through the body. The structure of blood (like a river) allows it to complete the function of carrying nutrients and waste. Structure and Function
9
Red Blood cells (RBC) Carry oxygen to all cells
Have hemoglobin made of iron to combine with oxygen. Four main blood types: A, B, O, AB RBC’s do NOT contain a nucleus and only live about 3 months. Oxygen is needed for cellular respiration:
10
White blood cells (WBC)
Fight disease by making antibodies. Fewer white blood cells than red blood cells. 1:750 (WBC to RBC) Much larger than a red blood cell. WBC’s live up to 1 year.
11
Platelets Clot blood Make a net to catch blood cells .
Build up to form a scab.
