Respiratory System
5
Bronchus The right and the left main bronchi are tubes that deliver air from the trachea to the lungs Lined with cilia (tiny hairs) to remove dust
7
Bronchioles Small branches of the Bronchi
At the end of each bronchioles is an Alveolus
8
Alveolus(alveoli) Tiny air sacs Walls are one cell thick
Location of gas exchange
9
Capillaries A network of blood vessels
Blood receives new oxygen and releases its carbon dioxide Alveoli Bronchiole Capillary Blood without oxygen, from the heart Blood with oxygen to the heart
10
Aveolus (aveoli)
12
Protection of Lungs Pleura Pleural Fluid Ribs & Sternum
Thoracic vertebrae Intercostal Muscles
13
Pleura Each lung is surrounded by pleural fluid for protection
Around this fluid is a thin protective membrane called the pleura
14
Intercostal Muscles These muscles are located around the ribs
to aid with movement and protection
15
Thoracic Vertebrae These are the vertebrae that compose the back of the thoracic cavity The ribs attach to them
16
Pretend that you are a molecule of oxygen….
Describe your path from the air in the environment to the blood in the capillaries
17
Diaphragm A large muscle at the bottom of the chest
It controls the movement of air in and out of the lungs
19
Inhalation The diaphragm contracts down to pull air into the lungs
The ribs expand
20
Exhalation The diaphragm relaxes up to push the air(carbon
dioxide) out of the lungs The ribs relax smaller
21
