EU Legislation Toy Safety Directive 2009 General Product Safety Directive 2001 UK Legislation Consumer Protection Act 1987 European Communities Act 1972 General Product Safety Regulations 2005 Criminal offences

Safety Purpose is to ensure that all products intended for or likely to be used by consumers under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions are safe Includes 2nd hand products

4 Electrical Items Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994
BS1363 plug & BS1362 fuse to correct rating Plugs & Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 UK plug to BS1363 and UK fuse to BS1362 Needs to have insulation on live & neutral pins No continental 2 pin plugs except for shavers Plugs on Appliances Electric Fires wrt Fire Guards

5 Furniture Upholstered sofas, beds, chairs etc.
Specific UK legislation – flame retardancy Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 Bunk Beds /High Beds BS EN 474 & GPSR

6 Child Care Articles Cots – e.g. lead in paint/ banned chemical under REACH Carry Cot Stands – has to comply to BS EN 14466:2004 Prams Baby Walkers Baby Soothers (GPSR- BS EN 1400:2013)

7 Children’s Clothing Children’s Clothing
Cords & Drawstrings Drawstrings on Children’s clothing are deemed to be a strangulation hazard – has to be less than 220mm Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 1985 CPA Warnings on nightdresses and dressing gowns Have to be fire retardant Pyjamas not covered – but best practice

8 Children’s Fancy Dress Costumes
Have to comply with the Toy Safety Standard EN 71:2 Harmonised to the EU Toy Safety Directive Current clothing requirements Suggestions to reclassify as Clothing Nightwear Review testing

9 Toys Toy (Safety) Regulations 2011 for new toys
Applies to all products designed or intended (whether or not exclusively) for use in play by children under 14 General Product Safety Regulations 2005 covers 2nd hand toys but best practice would look to the Toy Regs see take into account the factors covered to check the 2nd hand toy against them to show that it is safe
