1 What will you need for this class?
Math Binder Lined paper Graph paper A Pencil A colored pen, pencil, marker or highlighter

2 Topic 1.1 The Cartesian Plane

3 Cartesian Plane – The plane formed when a horizontal number line and a vertical number line cross. Also called a coordinate grid.

4 4 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 -1 -2 -3 -4

5 X – axis – The Horizontal Line on the number grid.
Y – axis – The vertical number line on the coordinate grid. 2 1 -2 -1 1 2 -1 -2

6 Origin – The point where the x-axis and y-axis cross.
Quadrants – The four regions on the coordinate grid. 2 1 -2 -1 1 2 -1 -2

7 4 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 -1 -2 -3 -4

8 Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III Quadrant IV 4 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1
4 Quadrant II Quadrant I 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 -1 Quadrant III Quadrant IV -2 -3 -4

9 Coordinates – The values in an ordered pair.
Ordered Pair – (x, y) Examples:

10 Quadrant II ( - , + ) Quadrant I ( + , + ) Quadrant III ( - , - )
4 Quadrant II ( - , + ) Quadrant I ( + , + ) 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 -1 Quadrant III ( - , - ) Quadrant IV ( + , - ) -2 -3 -4

11 4 3 2 1 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 -1 -2 -3 -4

12 Battle Ship In grade pairs gr 7/gr 8 at your table, you will each color 3 ships onto your playing grid. The ships must each cross over at least 3 coordinates. Once player pair up, one player must guess coordinates on their partners Cartesian Plane, to try and ‘Sink their Battle Ship’

13 Cartesian Plane Examples (Please Follow Along & Write These Down)
Identify points on a coordinate grid.

14 Cartesian Plane Examples (Please Follow Along & Write These Down)
Plot the following points on a coordinate grid: A(-4,3), B(-2, -1), C(5, 3), D(4, -1), E(-5, -2)

15 Textbook Questions In pairs work through the following textbook questions: Note: Pairs must have one grade 7 student & one grade 8 students Math Links 7 – Page 8 #’s – 2, 5, 7, 9, 13 When you’re done, you may play Battleship

16 Learning Log Response What are the similarities and differences between two points with coordinates (0,3) and (3,0)?
