Introduction by Richard Adams
Clinical Essentials is a mandatory programme of training modules which aim to improve clinical practices, reduce clinical risk and ultimately will help our residents to lead ‘longer, healthier, happier lives’.
Our aim is to ensure your team has the confidence and competence to deliver clinical care to national standards and in the safest possible way.
There are two areas of training aimed at different roles in your team:
Clinical training which covers People Moving and Handling, MEDS Level 1 (and Level 2 for Senior Carers and Nurses), Care Planning, MCA/DoLS; and
Clinical Manager Development which supports those people in your team who are expected to supervise the clinical delivery of other team members on a day to day basis.

This training is mandatory for your home
It’s vital that we can all demonstrate clinical competence to the satisfaction of our regulators but also to meet the needs of our residents and their loved ones to deliver safe, effective, compassionate and responsive care.
We know that everyone is busy and releasing people for training is demanding but Clinical Essentials is mandatory because it means that we can reduce our clinical risk by targeting the right people with the right courses.

4. Why Clinical Essentials?
Who is it for?
This training is mandatory for Carers, Senior Carers, Nurses, CSMs and Unit Managers. 93 homes have been given priority access to this training to help improve their clinical practices and reduce risk. The detailed schedule shows which homes can access the training over the coming months.
Why is this mandatory?
It will help your team to build confidence and competence in the clinical care they deliver.
It will help your team deliver safe and effective clinical care to national standards and inspection guidelines.
It will help your team
meet the needs of our residents and the expectations of their loved ones.

The training will be instructor-led by the Clinical Skills Trainers and Regional Quality Managers and there will be separate training for Carers and Senior Carers/Nurses.
In addition, there is Clinical Manager Development for CSMs and Unit Managers who are responsible for providing clinical oversight and supervision of others on a day-to-day basis.

Check the schedule for dates and locations which are most convenient.

7. Talking to your teams about this mandatory training
Your team members will want to understand what this training is for and why we are treating it as mandatory attendance.
How to prepare your teams for this training:
Brief your Unit Managers and CSMs so that they are aware of the training
Ensure your Unit Managers and CSMs discuss this training during one-to-one meetings
Discuss this training in your usual team meetings and explain its importance to reducing risk
Put a note on your notice board about this training.
Make sure everyone knows when they are scheduled for training and where it’s taking place.

8. Questions and Answers Will I need agency/bank backfill?
Perhaps. You'll need to look at the schedule of training and consider this as part of your scheduling and rostering. You'll also need to plan your team's capacity and make sure you have the appropriate skill mix.
What happens if I’m short staffed on the day of training?
You will need to decide what is the priority within your home. The training is essential for individuals. However, you need to be aware of how your home is performing against commercial targets too. If you need support in making this decision, your Regional Director will be able to advise you in the first instance.
What are the benefits for my home?
If your teams are fully engaged in this, they will develop their clinical skills faster and it will support your home’s performance and inspection evidence as it demonstrates how you’re reducing clinical risk. It’ll also be a good boost for your team’s engagement as we know people want more training.
How do I explain this to my team?
This is mandatory training however many people will welcome the opportunity to take part in new clinical training as it'll make them feel more confident and capable to deliver their responsibilities. We also need to help people think of supervision as a positive thing and you'll need to explain that.
What records do I need to keep?
You should keep training attendance records in Operational Essentials Training Folder 13 so that you can prove what learning has taken place. You should also have a monthly training plan for your home so everyone knows when they are scheduled for training.
How do I embed this practice in my home?
Take an active interest in your team's daily activities and give feedback where you see practices that need to be improved or where someone is doing something well. When people return from training, ask them to talk you through their learning and share it with others, in a group supervision for example.
Who is paying for the travel if it’s required?
 This will need to come from your home’s budget.
