12 Differential Association Theory
The sociological theory that best defines Al Capone is Differential Association theory. Differential association theory is when the person behavior is influenced based on the people around them. Al Capone was a good kid growing up and never had any trouble until 6th Grade. He did not pass and the one day he punched his teacher in the nuts and got kicked out of class. After this occurred Al Capone's life changed completely. He started to get involved with gangs around Brooklyn committing petty crimes. When he was 18 he met a guy by the name of Jonny Torrio who was involved in illegal bootlegging operations. Torrio became Capones mentor and taught him everything he needed to know about being a criminal. Torrios life was threatened in 1925 and he ended up giving the business to Capone which had a net worth of 100 million dollars. Al Capone learned all of his criminal behavior through his mentor Jonny Torrio. Jonny was a very good friend of Capone's and they considered each other family. Torrio got capone involved in his business to teach him about techniques, motives, drives, and attitudes. A lot of capons friends when he was little committed petty crimes and that is what started the whole process. This is how Differential association theory best explains Al Capone.
