Popular / News Vs. Scholarly
Popular/News Sources Scholarly Sources Written by journalists for the general public Written by experts for other experts Published quickly (published today!) Published slowly (may take years) Based on secondary research Based on primary research More likely to have factual errors More likely to be authoritative and accurate Rarely includes references Footnotes, References, Evidence DISTRIBUTE HANDOUT - IS THIS A SCHOLARLY PUBLICATION?

Search Strategies Topic: How are robots used in heart surgery?
Key Concepts: robots heart surgery A Search Strategy is an organized methodology we follow to find information. Different steps to the Search Strategy - topic, concepts, synonyms, selecting resources… Sample Topic: How are robots used in heart surgery? Ask Class - what are the concepts in this topic? Ask Class - are there other terms besides the ones we have here? (This will lead to next slide) Heart or cardiac? Surgery or operation?
7
Concepts and Synonyms robots heart surgery robotic cardiac surgery
robotics heart surgery Different concepts because databases are ultimately organized and maintained by PEOPLE, and people may use different terminology. So to make sure we find relevant material, we have to try different terminology in our search. Notice the truncation on robot. We use an * to tell the database we want any variation of a word (in this example, we want articles about robot, robots, robotics, etc.) People refer to this as truncation, and may also refer to the * as wildcard character. Also notice we split heart surgery into two concepts. This will help improve our search. We can now join our concepts together using AND and OR. robot cardiac procedure robot* operation
8
Concepts and Synonyms… IMPROVED
robot* heart surgery cardiac operation procedure
9
Search Strategies - Using OR
Use “AND” or “OR” to focus your search “OR” Finds articles that contain either term, but not necessarily both heart cardiac Use OR to join SYNONYMS Broader results (more results) but less specific.
10
Search Strategies - Using AND
Finds articles that contain BOTH concepts robot* surgery Use AND to join CONCEPTS. Narrower results (Fewer results) but more relevant.
11
Use AND and OR robot* heart surgery cardiac operation procedure
robot* AND (heart OR cardiac) AND (surgery OR operation OR procedure) AND to join CONCEPTS OR to join SYNONYMS Use parenthesis to force the proper relationship among concepts. For example, we would NOT want (robot and heart) or cardiac…

What’s the Right Tool For the Job?
NEED Books Articles USE this tool Catalog Periodical Indexes and Databases Library Homepage Review We want scholarly information We have an idea of the concepts and topic Now - how do we actually get books, articles, etc.? To find Books, use the Catalog To find Articles, use the Periodical Indexes and Databases We will discuss databases in more detail later, but for now we will find Books with the Catalog… DEMONSTRATION Catalog Keyword: robot and surgery
13
How to find articles Databases: Indexes / Abstracts / Full Text
MOST databases contain Citations MANY databases contain Abstracts SOME databases contain Full Text Search by using keywords Consider: Multidisciplinary vs. Specialized databases < DEMONSTRATION: SEARCH Engineering Village 2 Compendex for robot* and (heart or cardiac) and surgery> Mention Full Text, SFX Demonstrate RefWorks We’ve found books. Now we need to locate scholarly articles. How do we do this? Use Indexes and Databases. Indexes to scholarly information are available in print and electronic formats. Prior to the availability of electronic databases, people manually read through printed Indexes and Abstracts to locate scholarly information. Over the past several years, electronic versions of indexes were created. These databases grew in coverage (number of journals, years of online information) and content (citations, abstracts, and full text). Now people can search databases to find scholarly information related to their concepts. A brief discussion about specialized databases: If you searched an engineering database for “robot surgery”, you would expect results about robot design, performance, results, etc. If you searched a legal database for “robot surgery”, you may find case law, malpractice lawsuits, lawsuits related to design or patent infringement, etc. Library Homepage

Full Text and SFX SFX will help you jump from one database that does not have the article to another database that does have the full text. NOTE - SFX is not just about finding full text. It provides links to information that might also be helpful to your search. Look for "SFX Links" or the SFX button and logo: SFX could have been demonstrated before this slide. Either quickly skip through this slide or take more time if necessary.

…and more! [Databases by Subject: Engineering]
Useful Databases INFOTRAC / Expanded Academic Ei Compendex ASCE Civil Engineering Journals Applied Science & Technology Abstracts Now that you have seen one database, you should keep in mind there are more than 20 engineering databases for you at Drexel! Here is a brief list of useful Engineering Databases: INFOTRAC / Expanded Academic is a Multidisciplinary database with Good coverage of the Sciences, Technology, Business, Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences. Ei Compendex is a Comprehensive Engineering database. ASCE Civil Engineering Journals contains information from the American Society of Civil Engineering Applied Science & Technology Abstracts includes coverage of Scientific and Technological fields. IEEE Xplore provides full-text access to all IEEE materials – great for Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Bio Med. Science Direct provides full-text of core journals in the sciences and engineering. To find more Databases, go to the library home page and choose Database By Subject, or ASK A LIBRARIAN FOR HELP. Why use these databases instead of Google? IEEE Xplore Science Direct …and more! [Databases by Subject: Engineering]

Why Not Just Use The Web? The Web is Good For: Professional Societies
Government Publications Free Resources From Libraries and Universities Limitations of the Web: Little or No Scholarly Content No Subscribed Content Too Many Results Even using Google Scholar you are only finding the CITATION of the information. The library maintains subscriptions to online resources, but some of the authentication information is embedded in the library website. IF YOU USE GOOGLE SCHOLAR AN FIND AN ITEM AND YOU ARE TOLD YOU MUST PAY TO SEE THE ITEM - STOP!!! The library may already own it, but since you reached the item using google and not the library links it does not know you are from Drexel. Talk about Subscribed Content Is there information that Google can't find? For example, would you use Google to check your grades? No, because that Google can't find that information. There is other information that Google can't find, such as the subscribed content in the Databases available through the library. Google will not pay for you to reach this information, and the information supplier will not give it away - that is where the library comes in! Databases Google vs. Compendex Topic: Robot Heart Surgery
Google - 45,100 items BBC NEWS | Health | Robot heart surgery set for UK ... Monday, 8 January, 2001, 16:57 GMT Robot heart surgery set for UK. The daVinci system in operation in Germany. A pioneering system ... news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/ stm Compendex - 26 items Optimal planning of robotically assisted heart surgery: First results on the transfer precision in the operating room Coste-Maniere, Eve (ChIR Medical Robotics Group, INRIA Sophia Antipolis); Adhami, Louai; Mourgues, Fabien; Bantiche, Olivier Source: International Journal of Robotics Research, v 23, n 4-5, April/May, 2004, p Let's discuss more of the drawbacks to Google: Google has limited access to scholarly information. You want to easily identify how current the information is, or when the information was published. You don't want to look through 45,000 results! Subscription databases will help you save time - you want a few useful ARTICLES, not thousands of WEBSITES. Can't easily sort or manage your results in Google - in our databases you can sort by most recent first, and sometimes by author or other criteria. Search executed October 29, 2004

Ethics and Plagiarism Engineering Ethics Plagiarism See the Plagiarism online tutorial Every engineering design has ethical considerations. Engineering ethics encompass material selection, safety, manufacturing, privacy… it could even impact copyright - ex. Napster. Napster was a technical creation with social and legal implications. Proper Citations are essential for any project or paper, but they are also essential in the 'real world'. Failure to cite properly could lead to accusations of plagiarism, failing grades, and expulsion. Plagiarism essentially falls into two categories - deliberate and accidental. Both are serious offenses, and there is ample information on the library website to help you avoid plagiarism and submit acceptable work. RefWorks is a new tool the library purchased to help curtail plagiarism and make citations easier to manage. Let's talk more about citations and RefWorks.
25
Citations - Introduction
Citations identify sources Author Article Title and Journal Title OR Book Title, etc. Date item was published Citations must follow a specific STYLE (ex. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). There are DIFFERENT STYLES!
26
Citation Styles - Examples
APA, 5th Edition Tokuyasu, T., Oota, S., Tokuyama, T., Asami, K., Kitamura, T., & Sakaguchi, G. et al. (2003). Mechanical modeling of a beating heart for a cardiac palpation training system.
