UNIT 1 Matter Day 3 September 1, 2017
Physical Properties of Matter 8th Grade Science
2
No Science starter; do the following:
Using complete sentences, answer the E.Q. on page 3.
3
Plan for today: 1. E. Q. 2. Density Discussion Notes Lab 3. Wrap-up
Matter Plan for today: 1. E. Q. 2. Density Discussion Notes Lab 3. Wrap-up
4
Homework: 1. Make flash card for: (5) Density 2. Density worksheet front and back. *You will turn in flash card 5 Tuesday, and I will check the density worksheet Tuesday.
5
Write today’s date on the top line of page 5 in your binder and copy the following:
Essential Question- How can I calculate density of objects?
6
Turn to your vocabulary sheet.
7
Measurable Properties of Matter
5. Density: (more on the next slide- It’s okay if you put some additional details in the definition box.) Def: the amount of matter in a given amount of space or volume. A.D. all matter has its own unique density
8
Measurable Properties of Matter
A.D. Formula - Density = Mass/Volume m (g) D = V (mL or cm³) A.D. Unit for density is g/mL or g/cm3. A.D. Density of water is 1g/cm³ (anything with a higher density will sink in water; anything with a lower density will float) A.D. fill this in on your notes m D V
9
Which has the greater density?
Greater density/blue layer
10
At the top of page 6, write “Density practice and lab”.
11
Calculate the density for the following objects: a. Mass= 10 Volume= 5
Practice – Answer on page 6. Only use 6 lines. -5 minutes. Go! Calculate the density for the following objects: a. Mass= 10 Volume= 5 b. Mass= 16 Volume= 8 c. Mass= 5 Volume= 10 d. Mass= 12 Volume= 12 Which object is water? Which object(s) will float in water? Which objects(s) will sink in water? 2g/cm³ sinker 2g/cm3 sinker 0.5g/cm3 floater 1 g/cm³ water
12
You need a density lab worksheet. You will glue this onto page 6
You need a density lab worksheet. You will glue this onto page 6. try not to glue it over something else. Fold it, if necessary.
13
Density Lab – Work cooperatively with your lab group and be sure your answers are matching. Allow every group member to participate. Let me know if a group member is not cooperating. Do not make a mess. When your group is done, clean up your station. Make sure all materials are back in the blue bucket. Leave things the way you found them.
14
Density Lab Part 1 – Irregular Solid
See if you can find the density of two marbles! Use the materials at your lab table. SHOW YOUR WORK - You will turn in this lab for points. Mass of the two marbles _______ Volume of the two marbles _______ Formula for density __________ Calculation ____________________ Density of two marbles __________ (Did you include the correct units of measurement above?)
15
Density Lab Part 2 – regular Solid
See if you can find the density of the cube! Use the materials at your lab table. SHOW YOUR WORK - You will turn in this lab for points. Mass of the cube _______ Volume of the cube _______ Formula for density __________ Calculation ____________________ Density of the cube __________ (Did you include the correct units of measurement above?)

WRAP- UP - Discuss with your group and answer today’s E.Q. Begin your density worksheet. It is homework (front and back). Also, do card #5. Have a great long weekend. Be safe!!!
