Awareness on Diabetes
Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab plays a key role in the progress of biological and medical sciences not only in the university but all over the country by providing well-trained manpower in the fields of microbiology, medical biology and molecular genetics. The aim of this symposium is to promote awareness on different aspects of diabetes. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disease and one of them is Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes is a pathological condition in which body destroys cells within the pancreas. Normally, pancreas produce the blood sugar-regulating hormone that is insulin. Prevalence rate of diabetes in Pakistan is approximately 35.4 million people, 9.1% of adults aged 20-79, are living with diabetes, Over 40.6% of these are undiagnosed. Diabetes was responsible for 342,000 deaths in 2015.
There is no known preventive measure for type 1 diabetes but Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented by maintaining a normal healthy lifestyle. Physical and dietary activity also reduce the risk of diabetes by 28%. Globally, the increasing prevalence of diabetes is creating a financial burden on the economy of the country. This symposium is a short attempt to highlight the global scenario, prevalence and advance treatment strategies of diabetes.
