1 TLM Qualifications Mark Book and Learner Site
Reducing administration and improving pupils engagement in assessment.

2 Rick Barnes Head of Computing and Information Technology
Bedale high school North yorkshire @barnesrick

3 Why Change to TLM Expiration of Previous qualification
Royal society Report Computing at School Curriculum reforms Need to find a more manageable assessment system Non specialist teachers Last year 155 pupils 1 teacher 84% Pass or above Work load ???

4 Our Plan IT Computing KS3 KS4 Compulsory
TLM Level 2 Certificate for IT User Skills in Open Systems and Enterprise Optional TLM Level 2 Extended Certificate in IT User Skills in Open Systems and Enterprise TLM Level 1 Certificate in IT User Skills in Open Systems and Enterprise  TLM Level 1 Certificate in Open Systems Computing TLM Level 2 Certificate in Open Systems Computing  This left holes in our plan No levels for KS3 No computing qualifications in place 1st OCR computing – Option Then we added TLM Level 1 to replace levels But we were still short of a way to assess computing and no new levels planned OCR GCSE Computing

5 Moving to TLM Initial Plan to phase in the use of the learner site
Starting with Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils new to the qualifications Retaining existing tracking and evidence systems for Year 10 and 11 Plan to start with low risk year groups and continue with out previous set up for delivering the ITQ

6 Moving to TLM What really happened
Using the system highlighted the benefits of self assessment and submitting work in smaller sections provides more immediate progress checks and feedback opportunities Feedback process similar to our previous systems but added to the tracker pupils have engaged more with this process Non specialist teachers added to the team meant that what might have worked for staff that already knew one system wouldn’t work Too many things Too many places Fragmented marking

7 Mark Book - School Admin
CSV upload of pupil data Simple group management Groups can be assigned school assessors Live link between the learner site and the mark book site This meant that in less than 2 weeks we were able to move all pupils on to the new system, before they even knew we hadn’t planned it that way in september

8 Mark Book - Teacher Staff have full access to detailed data for their classes Staff can request awards for their classes at any time Moderation and feedback directly between class teacher and TLM Certificates available to print as soon as moderation completed Certificates improve pupil motivation Not sure that staff will ever want to take this much control but they can if the want to Mark Book

9 Learner Site - Staff Print initial usernames and passwords
Register pupils/classes for units Access submitted work Agree pupils self assessments to award criteria Give feedback and return work that needs improvements Track class progress Track individual pupils By Unit By Criterion Staff have all the tools they need to administer their groups, assessment and tracking

10 Learner Site - Pupils Pupils can submit work
Text comments Upload files Links to online evidence (blogs, videos ) Select assessment criteria Self assess work Send work to their teacher Track Progress Read feedback and resubmit work Pupils can work in ways that suit them although we might not be ready for them. Learner Site

11 Benefits to Pupils 2013 Results 2014
4 pupils following a work related timetable who would not have received any qualifications 2 Year 9 pupils who had started the qualification asked to complete the remaining units in their last few weeks with us and left the school certificate in hand. 2014 Some pupils are already using the tracking system and assessment grids to work more independently (4 weeks) More pupils choosing to act on feedback without teacher input Some year 9 pupils will have their first unit certificates before they get their report this term. (9 Students have already completed their first unit) Positive indicators from a small sample group the progress of last years year 9 the new year 9

12 New Strategies Early start Settling activities
Pupils learning the systems from year 7 Multiple pathways (lots of units) Curriculum coverage (lots of units) Settling activities Pupils used to wait for the whole class before they found out about todays lesson Lower school students used to practice touch typing until all computers were ready (some up to 7 years old) Now pupils look at the tracker, check feedback and get on with improvements

13 New Strategies It’s not something we asked them to do
A few started to check Then they started to make improvements Then the class saw them making more progress More joined in We jumped on the band wagon and told them they had to start all lessons like this

14 Benefits to School Reduced Admin On demand Moderation
Increased pupil motivation Reduced costs

15 More Benefits The management and storage of evidence is managed by TLM
Evidence is linked directly to the assessed criteria, easy to trace and audit Choice of file formats allows pupils to submit evidence in a format that suits them not the assessment system Images (Screen capture) Descriptions Links to blogs Video evidence Audio evidence Other uploaded files

16 The Future Cross curricular links Music Technology Humanities
Several units will link well with existing work in other departments Music Sound editing Specialist software Technology Specialist Software Humanities Presentations Video editing Arts – Photography Imaging software

17 Literacy Descriptive criteria provide excellent opportunities for literacy Blogging, pupils are creating evidence and presenting it to a global audience (and getting feedback)
