Teacher Recommendations will be preloaded Counselors will have reviewed students transcripts prior and will have loaded any classes needed for graduation * 3

Completing the Registration Form
Students should have a pre-work registration form and an ELECTIVE (purple) Sheet: 1 green (11th), blue (10th) or yellow (9th) All BHS Graduation Requirements & course selection options are on the registration form & on the website. Course Selections are a polling of interest; not a 100% guarantee of selections. STEP 1: Look at the mode in which you are viewing your selections. Change your view mode to “Exit Entry Mode”... this will enable you to see any comments made by your counselor. Next, click “Entry Mode” to select courses. * 4

STEP 2: Carefully select 9 course offerings and 3 alternates Core academic courses have been automatically enrolled or recommended in Family Portal (aka ASPEN, Family/Parent Portal) On the front of the form, when selecting your courses, be sure to write in the full course name exactly as it is shown on the back of the sheet Select the remaining courses to fill in the 9 course offerings Students will meet with Counselors in groups to learn how to Register Online and Discuss Course Selections STEP 3: Academic Release – Complete only if you disagree with the core class teacher recommendations or need a Level Change; Found on the Website

STEP 4: Review your transcript in Family Portal, graduation requirements, Focused Plan of Study (remember that Canvas assignment?!) and discuss course selections with your parents. STEP 5: Choose your selections online on or before Class of 2018 (Current Juniors) - Mar. 2 Class of 2019 (Current Sophomores) - Feb. 24 Class of 2020 (Current Freshman) - Feb. 24 by 3:30 in Family Portal NOTE: No selections submitted = courses will be chosen for you. * 6

Step 6: Click Post when you have made your final decisions. This indicates to your counselor you have made your final decisions. ** Click Post = you acknowledge that you have discussed your Course Requests with your parents. **

Application/Audition Courses
The following classes are APPLICATION or AUDITION courses: Virtual Enterprise, Leadership, Peer Tutor, YRBK/Annual, Newspaper, Female Acappella, Mixed Acappella, Bearden Singers, Musical Theatre, Stage Tech, Acting 3, Hon Art Photo, AP Art 2-D, AP Art 3-D, AP Art Drawing, AP Music Theory, Hon Art, Scientific Research, Dual Enrollment (11th & 12th) , CTE Practicums & Work Based Learning (12th Grade & 11th Grade Writing Lab Only). If you are not selected for the course one of your electives or alternatives will be selected. NOTE - If a student’s alternate courses won’t work in the schedule, counselors will select courses that will best meet graduation requirements and work within the confines of BHS’s master schedule.

Directions for Each Section
Why should I read the “Directions and Important Notes” on each section of my registration?.... They provide important information that will help you to make the best decision in selecting courses. They will prevent disappointment when you are removed from a course, due to not meeting that course’s requirements. (ex. not having a pre-requisite for a class) * 14

Yearlong Courses Note the distinction between Year-long or Semester on course selection sheet. Enrollment in a linked course is a BINDING AGREEMENT, and your schedule WILL NOT BE ALTERED during the school year. These courses will take up 2 (out of your 9) course choices.

BHS ACT Info What do ACT Benchmarks mean?
If a student meets a Benchmark score, they have a…. a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher …..in corresponding credit- bearing first-year college courses.

4 or 5 required classes If you are not in a school-sponsored sport, marching band, or taking 2 semesters of ROTC; sign up for a PE course Have you started your foreign language yet? Your Elective Focus courses should build on past & current elective courses; (e.g., if you had Health Sci Education this year, select EF courses in the CTE column which have “Health Sci Education”) Focus on GPA, especially if hoping to take DE courses in Junior/Senior year. 2/9/15 20

Remember your GPA and ACT are a part of the consideration for TN HOPE Scholarship If you are in English 3 CP, then you will also be in a “Technical Writing” course which is really “Writing for College” This is a required course for all CP level English 3 students. 2/9/15 21

rising Junior notes Pay close attention to Important Notes in ASPEN about AP Lit & AP US History Yearlong & ENG 3 CP 3:40 PM Offerings If you want to take AP Lit & AP US History Yearlong, you must indicate that you want to take as YEARLONG in the Notes to Counselor Section; the default will be SEMESTER If you are interested in a 3:40 pm Eng 3 CP class, you must indicate this interest in the Notes to Counselor Section 2/9/15 22

New for school year! AP Seminar- taken Junior year Pre-reqs: Honors English 2 & AP Gov. Co-reqs: AP Literature & AP US History AP Research- taken Senior year Co-reqs: AP Language & AP Economics “Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma.” 2/9/15 23

CP English 3 Students - If you meet DE requirements with your ACT PLAN scores & GPA, you need to consider DE…. Remember, your scores & GPA will be rechecked before finalization of schedules Interested in 6:50 Eng 4 CP or Econ/PF Classes?.... You need to indicate that in the Notes to Counselor Section 2/9/15 25

rising Senior notes Do you have PE on your Schedule but you have played a Sport? This means Activity PE is missing from your Transcript. Double Check your Transcript for the Activity PE If Activity PE is missing from your transcript, go to the Class of 2018 website and fill out the Activity PE Credit Form If you have or have had Marketing 1 or VE, that counts for Economics.

Dual Credit The statewide dual credit initiative provides academically challenging, high school courses that are aligned to postsecondary standards. Student who pass the course challenge exam earn credit that can be applied to any public postsecondary institution in Tennessee. Dual Credit Classes at BHS Psychology DC Probability and Statistics DC

Dual Enrollment: How do students enroll?
Option 1: Take a class at BHS 2 or 3 days a week Psychology (11th and 12th) English Composition 1010 and 1020 (12th) Encourage Juniors who received an A in CP Eng 3 and qualifying test scores to enroll in DE English Option 2: Take a class at PSTCC “Off Campus Dual Enrollment” ** Must receive either an A or B in order to keep grant eligibility. Grant is only available to Jrs and Srs. *

Dual Enrollment DE is when you are enrolled in high school and college at the same time. To qualify for General Education courses such as English 1010 / Psychology, students must have: 3.0 or higher un-weighted GPA (no exceptions) AND one of the following ACT Reading score of 19+ & English score of 18+ PSAT/SAT Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing score of 500 or higher

Dual Enrollment (Jrs & Srs)
Classes of 2017 & beyond…. First 2 classes are awarded up to $500 3rd class – only $200 4th class – no money awarded Only Core Dual Enrollment Classes will be awarded 1.0 weight (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, or college courses that exceed or are equivalent to an AP Course). Steps to Dual Enrollment
Choose desired courses during BHS registration and indicate through Online Registration. Complete the DE application available during registration in the Counseling Office & Website and return to your School Counselor by Feb. 24 for juniors and March 2 for seniors. Register to take the ACT if necessary. If you currently don’t have a qualifying test score, must take the March (Juniors)or April (Sophomores) ACT. Attend Dual Enrollment meeting held in April/May and complete all DE requirements. Visual 1: Points of Emphasis 32

Online Registration for DE Classes
OFF CAMPUS DE CLASSES are grouped by subject area. Please choose the subject area closest to the Course you are taking. An example is DE Spanish I = DE Foreign Lang. This tells the counselor you are taking the DE Spanish class Off Campus at Pellissippi. You MUST provide your counselor documentation of your registration or your DE course could be dropped.
