1 Key Stage 4 Guided Pathways Year 10 into 11
Steve Roberts – Principal Chris Vallance – Assistant Principal Please read the notes throughout this presentation to help guide you through it. Replace Paul Sorby and title with your own name and title, so parents/students have this for reference.

2 “Students First” The focus of our curriculum has always been and will continue to be : High quality outcomes for all students Curriculum changed for Sept 2014; might have older children who have done a different model

3 GCSE Reform Reformed GCSEs are now in the process of being introduced. Reformed GCSEs have a new grading scale from (instead of A* - G). 9 being the top grade.

4 A new grade 1 will be at the same standard as an old grade G
A good grade used to be a C or above and a good grade in the new courses is a 5 or above A new grade 7 will be at the same standard as an old A Around the top 3 per cent of students will be awarded a new grade 9 (higher than an A*) Added to grade c part for clarity.

5 Achievement in English and mathematics Attainment 8 score
Under the new reforms, two key measures will impact on the life chances of your child: Achievement in English and mathematics Attainment 8 score These will be used by employers, colleges, apprenticeships and universities as part of their selection process; in addition to individual subject qualifications achieved by the student. Mention 2016 EM A*-C Emphasise the importance of getting at least a good grade in English and mathematics

6 Level 2 Threshold Performance Measure
5+ A*-C, including English and maths Has for many years been a student’s golden ticket into many careers, sixth forms, apprenticeships, college courses We believe this will continue to play a big part in progression opportunities But there is a new kid on the block !

7 Broad and Balanced Curriculum….. “Attainment 8”
Basket Slot Subject Notes Weighting 1 English For English – can be Language or Literature – best grade double counted, but only if both taken X 2 2 Maths 3 EBacc 1 From - GCSE Sciences, including GCSE Computer Science, GCSE Geography, GCSE History, GCSE MFL X 1 4 EBacc 2 5 EBacc 3 6 Other 1 From - approved vocational courses, further EBacc subjects, other GCSE subjects 7 Other 2 8 Other 3 Attainment 8 = New Level 2 Threshold Measure Emphasise the fact that students must take English Language and Literature for the score to be doubled for that slot. Explain that the Ebacc basket is different to the full Ebacc but that it is the same range of subjects. We will help students to have a BROAD AND BALANCED curriculum; this framework supports that. OUTWOOD ARE WELL PLACED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS GOOD OUTCOMES FOR BOTH THE 5+ A*-C MEASURE AND THE NEW ATTAINMENT 8 MEASURE

8 An Example Student A* 8.5 A 7 B 5.5 C 4 D 3 E 2 F 1.5 G 1 U
Qualification Grade Points Basket Doubled Total Points GCSE Maths 7 1 Yes 14 GCSE English Language 8 16 GCSE Core Science A 2 No GCSE Additional Science B 5.5 GCSE Spanish GCSE Art C 4 3 GCSE French GCSE English Literature 6 GCSE Religious Studies D N/A Knowing this is important because we feel that students may at some point be asked to quote their Attainment 8 score by colleges, universities or employers – some may ask for this to be reported as a grade – Life Chances! Students should be aiming for the best Attainment 8 score possible. Note that the Religious Studies grade won’t count in the Attainment 8 score, but the student will receive a certificate for their exam result as normal. Maths and English will be graded for the first time on the 1-9 scale (9 is the highest grade). A student’s total score is always divided by 10 … even if some of the slots are empty. Note – the points v grades equivalence is different cf 2016 eg B = 6 (2016) = 5.5 (2015) **** A focus on achieving a good Attainment 8 score will also support a student in achieving 5+ A*-C, including English and maths **** This student’s total of 62 points is divided by 10 to give them their Attainment 8 Score of 6.2

9 The (Full) English Baccalaureate…..
To gain the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), students will need to gain a grade ‘A* - C’ in each of these subjects: English GCSE Maths GCSE Science GCSE × 2 (Core & Additional, or Triple) Humanity GCSE - History or Geography Language GCSE - French, German or Spanish Some things to think about… Some students may be asked to take additional English, maths or science courses to boost their chances of getting good grades in those subjects in Year 11. Students who have taken a language in either Years 9 or 10, should consider whether they might want to take a humanity in Year 11 to gain their full Ebacc – it’s important to make a distinction between the Ebacc group of subjects in group 2, and the full Ebacc. Explain that students who are thinking of going to university may find having the Ebacc an advantage – some universities are asking for this.

10 To make your child`s Attainment 8 score as high as possible we are:
Moving history and geography, for all Year 10 students studying these courses, onto the new 9-1 GCSE and continuing the course on 3 hours per week into Year 11 Providing an opportunity for some students who are studying French, Spanish or computer science in Year 10 on the A*-G GCSE, to take the new 9-1 GCSE in Year 11 Providing an opportunity for more students to sit triple science - Physics, Chemistry, Biology - in Year 11 Giving extra time to maths and English in Year 11 for students who need it The impact of these reforms means we need to make changes now to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child. Expect history and geography results to be up to a grade higher than if students take the exam in Y10. Students can take both the A*-G GCSE (y10) and the 9-1 GCSE in MFL (y11) if necessary Rest assured, we will not compromise the outcomes for students in the key subjects of English and maths

11 Why are we making these changes now ?
These new GCSE 9-1 courses in were not available when students chose their options in Spring 2015 They only became available to start teaching this September

12 The OGAT KS4 Curriculum Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 Core English 4 hrs Maths 4 hrs Science 4 hrs PE 2 hrs RE/LIFE 1 hr Consolidation 1 hr Maths 3 hrs PE 1 hr Science 6 hrs Options Students can choose three courses from a list of options, each occupying 3 hrs per week in Year 9 and then 4 hrs per week in Year 10. Students study the same three courses over the two years. As a default, students will complete and sit exams in these three option subjects at the end of Year 10. The expectation is that all students will study at least one EBacc option subject in Year 9/10. In Year 11 students will be guided to choose subjects to fill the 9 hrs of option time in blocks of 3 hrs. For most students this will be: one further subject (studied for 6 hrs per week) plus (for 3 hrs per week) either - a second further subject or - consolidation of a core subject (English, maths or science) Highlight the fact that students will take their exams at the end of Year 10, and choose new courses to study in Year 11 Describe how the Consolidation period allows students to focus more time on gaining their target grades in Year 11. Describe how we may ask students to use one or more of their choices to boost their chances of achieving their target grades in the vital subjects of English, maths and/or science. Students may also be asked to take additional English, maths or science to support them in achieving their best grades in those subjects.

13 Year 11 Curriculum (2016/2017) Core subjects: Maths, English, Science, PE, Consolidation. A combination of 9 periods in total from the courses on the following slide. Please note that these courses are subject to sufficient student numbers enrolling onto them. This is not a list of courses that are all guaranteed to run. For this reason, during year 10 into 11 options interviews students will be asked for several reserve choices. Insert the Year 11 courses into this table – brief subject titles and the number of periods each will be taught in. “This is just for illustration and may change”. Explain how some subjects can be delivered in three periods and some will require six – we have decided on a subject by subject basis which fall into each category. Students will be identified for additional English, maths and science dependant upon how likely they are to meet their target grades in those subjects by the end of Year 11, or in order to improve their overall Attainment 8 score.
