Agenda October 28th Music Professional Development Day 8:15 – 8: Opening Sign-in and check-in on Sched, Objectives for the Day, Icebreaker 8:30 – 9: DCCs Performance Workshop Participants will collaborate and engage in performance related activities designed by the DCC Brainstorm and discuss strategies that will encourage and engage students to perform. 9:15 – 9: Planning / Preparing a Performance Participants will use grade level appropriate units as exemplars to plan and prepare a lesson towards performance 9:45 – 10: BREAK 10:00 – 11: Creating a Performance for a target audience Participants will brainstorm and discuss audience etiquette, types of audiences, etc Participants will discuss repertoire, students’ interest, technical skills and audience appreciation. 11:05 -11: Reflection How will I implement these activities in my classroom? 11:05 -11: Closing and Exit 8:00 Slide 2 DCCs will sign in participants on Sched and have them use a sign in sheet as well. After a review of the agenda, facilitator will engage participants in energizers for vocal and instrumental ensembles. Create a performance for a target audience.
October 28th Music Professional Development Day Session Objectives PLC members will: Brainstorm strategies and activities that will engage students to perform. Use the unit - “Settling the Score” as an exemplar to plan and prepare a performance. Create a performance for a target audience. Slide 3 DCCs will break down the objectives for the session and invite questions from the participants (if there’s any). District of Columbia Public Schools | September 2016

October 28th Music Professional Development Day DCC Performance Workshop DCC will create a performance activity based on their area of expertise and engage participants to collaborate and then perform. Slide 4 DCCs will own this session by creating a performance activity with their PLC Groups based on their area of expertise. For Example: Orff Instruments, EC Music Activities, Kodaly approach to performances, Creative movement and folk dance. DCCs will provide participants with guided questions to help them with feedback as to how the activity will be implemented in their various classrooms. Participants will be given time to reflect on the activity and discuss how it will be implemented in their various classrooms. District of Columbia Public Schools | September 2016

You can add more slides or content matter, etc. Ensure that your participants have a clear understanding what they will take to their classrooms at the end of your session. Slide 6 Facilitator will ask participants to form two groups during which they will discuss and document strategies and activities that will encourage and engage students to perform. This is also an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and the different strategies which they have used successfully. At the end of this session, each group will share what they discussed and what they think works well in different school settings. October 28th Music Professional Development Day Planning & Practice Instructions: Navigate Canvas to access these units appropriate to your grade level Elementary School: “Settling the Score” Take about 10 minutes to look through these units and discuss the contents with a partner or in a group. Slide 7 Facilitator will ask participants to move into grade level specific groups. Each group will navigate Canvas to access units appropriate to their grade level, for example: Elementary School – “Settling the Score” Participants will have about 10mins to browse through the unit and discuss with a partner or in a group how they will use the unit to design a lesson on performance. Collaborate to plan a lesson towards performance, thinking about target audience, repertoire and musical skills. Bringing it all together – Performance Lesson
October 28th Music Professional Development Day Bringing it all together – Performance Lesson Instructions: Participants will now put into practice all that has been discussed in creating a performance based on their interest and musical skills. Participants will discuss the kind of performance and their target audience. Slide 10 – Showtime Facilitator will now have participants put into practice all that have been discussed and explored. They will now use the lesson they designed before the break to present a performance to the group. Give the different groups about 5 minutes to discuss their target audience and the content of their performance. These performance activities must be videotaped after which participants will reflect on the process of putting the performance together. District of Columbia Public Schools | September 2016

Discuss repertoire appropriate for their grade level with reference to students’ interest, technical skills and audience appreciation. Slide 12 Facilitator will prepare participants to perform by engaging them with the following activities: Brainstorm and discuss audience etiquette – does it depend on the genre of music, location, performers, etc Different types of audiences – a classical concert, a rock concert, a rap concert, etc Repertoire appropriate for the different grade levels - how do you develop a repertoire for your students – musical skills, prescribed setting, audience request, etc Students’ interest and technical skills – will students develop their skills quicker if they are encouraged to play songs to know / like? Reflection Participants will now reflect and review on the session and how it will impact their instruction in their various classrooms. Slide 10 Facilitator will have participants reflect on how they can adapt these activities in their classrooms. Participants will be given the opportunity to share with the group how they will implement such activities in their lessons given that not all schools have the same resources and the students also different.
