How long can cluster run in Mixed-OS Mode? Between two and four weeks. Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade can be quick – it usually takes only a couple of hours - we will be providing guidance and documentation to customers that we will support a cluster running in mixed-os mode (WS.2012 R2 and WS.2016 nodes) for between two weeks and four weeks. There are many improvements in Windows Server 2016 clusters that customers will want to take advantage of as soon as possible. Will you have end-user documentation? Yes. TechNet documentation for Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade in Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview has already been published here:

Will you back-port this feature to Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008? No - at this time, we do not plan of back-porting this feature. Will you support “In-place Upgrade” for the individual cluster node instead of “Clean-OS install”? No – most customers have told us that they prefer a clean (fresh) install of Windows Server. (Please let us know your feedback on this issue!)

Will you support Preview-to-RTM Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade? I would like to smoothly adopt Windows Server 2016 Yes, starting with WS.2016 TP3 (I.E. WS.2016 T2WS.2016 TP3), and allowing for some exceptions, we will support WS.2016 preview-to-preview and WS.2016 final preview-to-RTM on a best-effort basis. We know that many customers would like this scenario to work, and we would like their feedback on the preview builds. As a caveat, for some workloads, we may have to document workarounds, and in some situations we may have to require the workload to be restarted. Our primary goal remains upgrade of Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM to Windows Server 2016 RTM. Does the Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster need to be fully patched before we can start with the Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade process? Yes. All the nodes on the Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster must have all the latest recommended patches installed prior to starting the Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade process.

Does Cluster Aware Updating (CAU) work in Mixed-OS Mode during Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade? Yes. CAU will continue to work while the cluster in running in Mixed-OS Mode, appropriately patching Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016 nodes as needed. Please be aware that CAU uses node drain, and may take nodes out of the cluster during Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade – some customers turn CAU off while upgrading their clusters with the Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade process. (see Stop-CauRun PowerShell cmdlet) Can I run the Update-ClusterFunctionalLevel cmdlet while nodes are OFF or Paused? No. All cluster nodes must be on (in active membership) for the Update-ClusterFunctionalLevel to work.

Will you change the cluster version number to match the major OS version number? 10 is nicer than 9! No, we have no plans at this time to change the cluster version number so that it matches the major OS number. A key objective of the Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade feature is that the cluster components and the rest of the OS components can be serviced versioned independently. Which customers and partners have tried Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade? Internally, Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade is being tested by all cluster workloads: SQL Server, Exchange Server, Hyper-V, Scale-out File Server, etc. Externally, we are working with a number of TAP customers.

If I have a physical, two node SQL Server cluster – either Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) or Availability Groups (AG), can I use Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade? Yes. There will be downtime when SQL Server fails over from the WS.2012 R2 node to the WS.2016 node – this is the same amount of time that a regular SQL Server failover takes – usually about a minute. Even if you have a large SQL Server cluster, usually it can be upgraded with a single failover. When one node is removed from the cluster to upgrade the OS, the cluster will have one less node for failover – reduced failover capacity.
