Space is the element of art that refers to the emptiness or area between, around, above, below or within objects. All objects take up space.

Shapes and forms are defined by the space around and within them.
TYPES OF SPACE: Shapes and forms are defined by the space around and within them. Positive space—figure—is the shape or form itself, it takes up actual space. Negative space—ground—is the empty space between the shapes or forms.

The shapes and forms you see depend upon your point of view. This is the angle from which the viewer sees an object. When artists want to show space in a 2-dimensional artwork to create the illusion of depth they rely on the rules of PERSPECTIVE.

Perspective is a graphic system that creates the illusion of depth and volume on a two-dimensional surface. The two-dimensional surface is referred to as the picture plane.

The part of the picture plane that is closest to you is the foreground
The part of the picture plane that is closest to you is the foreground. The area in between is the middle ground and the area farthest away is the background.
