Numeracy
2
So how are you feeling????? Frustrated!!!! P……. Off
Overwhelmed by the workload. Not sure what to do next??? All of the above!!!!
3
STOP
4
Remember K.I.S.S.!!!!
5
So let’s step back. What is your aim for your Year 9 class?
Decide you want to help one stage in particular or a small group, i.e. one or two border line ofstudents. REMEMBER YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TRY AND DO EVERYTHING IN ONE GO!!!!!!!!!!
6
OK so I have decided what I will do for my class.
7
What next??
8
Grouping Split your class into 2 groups based on the ADD/SUB strategy
result!!!! So if they are a stage 5 start there. Yes 2 groups (only do 3 if you are prepared to put the time in). Remember that in the past you have taught the class as a whole so splitting it into two IS AN IMPROVEMENT! Remember We do not have to DO EVERYTHING IN ONE YEAR
9
But I have never taught groups so how do I do this?
Only work with 2 groups. eg Stage 5 and 6( Yes I know that will disadvantage a few students but compared to teaching all 32 girls the same lessons and setting them the same work this is progress!) Seating You may want to change the seating in your classroom. So girls are now in groups of 4 or 6. You place the girls so you have the stage 6 girls sitting together and then the same for stage 5) keep any more able or less able within those groups also sitting next to one another so that if you need to help those students you can do so in one visit .
10
I don’t believe that the girls are that familiar with all the strategies and so
aiming at a lower stage with the majority wont hurt them. You can see if some are getting through the sheets faster ands need to move onto more challenging things.
11
Be prepared for the emphasis in the classroom to change.
The girls can become more chatty, that’s where you come in to keep them under control. Your role will shift from a teacher to facilitator. ( with seniors you may start to feel redundant as the girls help one another before they ask you.)
12
Folders Set up a folder of the work you want the groups to do.
Use a cartoon creature or ????? Something stuck onto the folder to denote the two groups eg.the Bart group and the Mickey mouse group( you guys can be more creative though!!!!)
13
Set the scene in the classroom
Explain to them about the Numeracy Project and what you are going to be doing. (no calculators) The girls will use materials, imaging, developing a generalisation. Talk to the girls about the difference between Knowledge and Strategies. Tell the girls we are doing some experimentation and get them to give you feedback. This is a collaborative effort with them and you working together. Set the boundaries of what you want them to do in the classroom. eg Collect work from folders, then mark with your neighbour or………. Also look at how you want the work to be done.
14
Sharing I am happy if you want to visit my 9K and
see me work with groups. If this means you need some time from another class please ASK we can get cover. Allow me to come into your class and help you with your groups or allow me to come in and teach a strategy with your class. (We will need to compare timetables to coordinate this)
15
Sharing Can we continue to meet once a week to share ideas or sheets or starters? Would is be possible on a Thursday during Deans meeting? I am going to put a box in the resource room for sheets/resources. As you create something can you put a copy in their indicating the stage it is for. I will then make copies for all once a week.
16
But 22 lessons on add/sub??
17
What an opportunity! To teach adding and subtracting in 22
lessons. You can do what you like when you like however you like!!!! How often do we as teachers get such an opportunity?
18
Oops that’s out of my comfort zone to have so much freedom!
Can’t you give me the 22 lessons . In short NO. Otherwise this defeats the purpose of the project and you helping your class gain some more skills in numeracy. What I am doing might be relevant to my class but not to YOURS. You need to have some ownership of the PROJECT AS WELL. Remember I am only one eight of a step in front of you in terms of what to do and when. WE ARE ALL LEARNING as we go. I can assure you I too have felt scared, unsure and nervous about what I am doing as well but I have persevered and moved onto being motivated about what I what to achieve in my class.
19
You can teach one lesson a week using numeracy strategies or up to 4.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING IN ONE GO.
20
The only expectations I have of you is that
by the end of 22 lessons your class has done some or all, dependng upon the class of the whole number strategies as outlined in the sheet.(see handout) Decimal work as outlined in your scheme and some integer work. ( again this may differ with the type of class you have)
21
But 22 lessons??
22
I don’t want to teach numeracy every day?
So don’t!
23
So what do I do for 22 lessons?
You can play games activities( 100s board , thousands book) starters textbook exercises go to the computer room use the powerpoint resources/thinking skills etc. use some of the sheets from the boys school that I put on the T drive on Monday. use the Figure It out Books. use the resources from the nzmaths website. (see folders in the resource room) Use the numeracy books in the Maths office(****) Equipment!!!!
24
So!!!! Don’t be afraid to experiment. Not everything will be perfect but that is where we can learn from one another. Talk to one another sharing ideas, or thoughts or get me to visit or for me to take a lesson. I am happy to support you in this way. Try to enjoy the lessons. Do what you can!!!! Make it manageable for you, your class and your circumstances. Please DON’T STRESS about this.
