WATER HOME Each Drop Counts!!!

What do we mean by water conservation and efficiency?
Waste less water shut off the water when it’s not being used Use water more efficiently use less water to do the same job Stop misusing water don’t use it for the wrong purpose

Domestic need of water…
Drinking 3 Cooking 4 Bathing 30 Flushing 40 Washing 25 Cleaning 20 Gardening 13 Total 135 COMMENTARY (Before putting on slide.) Now... I don't want you to think that conserving water will mean that you have to do without some conveniences or change the quality of your life. (Put on the slide.) This chart shows the amount of water used by one person each day in the countries listed. Notice that Canada and the United States use much more than the other four developed countries. So why does the average Canadian use 343 litres per day when the average resident of France uses half that? I think we have grown up with the mind-set that Canada, home to the largest freshwater lakes in the world, has unlimited fresh water. The rising cost of treating and delivering water alone makes a strong case for using water more prudently. I am sure that there are those in the audience who also consider it important to want to save water for their children and grandchildren. KEY POINTS Canadians use more water than people in most other countries. The belief that clean water is an endless, free resource in Canada is not accurate. ADDITIONAL NOTES Q. Where do these statistics come from? A. Environment Canada's booklet: Water Works! Freshwater Series A-4 (data from 1992).

We can save water everywhere …
COMMENTARY (WAIT before you put up the slide.) Knowing where water is used is the first step in figuring out how to use water more wisely. Where do you think you use the most water in your home? (Get ideas from the audience, but don't indicate who is right or wrong.) (Click) This diagram shows how much water is used in each part of your home. You'll notice that the bathroom is the smallest room but the biggest user – 35% for showers and baths and another 30% for toilets. That's a whopping 65% of your total water use. The laundry is next with 20%, then the kitchen with 10%, and household cleaning uses only 5%. This doesn't even mention the water we use outdoors! KEY POINTS The largest amount of water is consumed in the bathroom. 30% Toilet Flushing 5% Cleaning 35% Showers and Baths 10% Kitchen and Drinking 20% Laundry
11
“On average, people flush the toilet 5 times a day.”
1/3 of household water is used to flush the toilet
12
For toilet cisterns with a 7 litre flush or greater, insert a Save-a-flush to save up to 1 litre per flush. Fitting a Save-a-flush (1 Ltr. Bottle) in your toilet cistern can save up to 1 litre per flush. That’s a saving of nearly 2,000 litres per person per year.*
13
OLD TYPE FLUSH TANK For toilet cisterns with a 9 litre flush or greater, insert a 2 Ltr. Bottle to save up to 2 litres per flush. Inserts a 2 ltr. bottle (designed to work in toilet cisterns with a 9 litre flush or greater) could save up to 5,000 litres per person per year.*
14
Dual Flush Toilets conserve a lot of water even compared to the best conventional toilets because of the dual flush choice. The user chooses either a full (7 Ltrs) flush for solids or the (2 ltrs) flush for urine. Since the majority of toilet use is for urine, the savings are significant.

16
AERATOR FOR ALL TAPS Aerator is a water saving device placed on the end of taps to reduce the flow and save water. This is a very good resource for raising awareness for water saving through a practical solution. A Highly visible flow controller, which saves you up to 60 % water and energy.
17
Become A Water Detective
Become a detective at your Home to detect any leakage From Taps & Toilets.
18
DRIPPING TAP Regularly check taps and pipes for leaks. 600 liters per day is wasted by a continuously dripping tap.
19
Save Water …. Every drop counts!!!

Technology + Attitude!

Washing Machine Washing machines can use between 90 to 200 litres of water per load! Be sure to choose carefully the one that suits you best and match the load setting on the washing machine with the amount of laundry to be washed.
22
BRUSHING THE TEETH Turn off tap while cleaning your teeth, shaving or washing your face. You can waste can up to 9 litres a minute by just letting the water pour down the sink
23
Washing the car
24
Washing The Car Wash your car using a bucket and sponge. Hose only for a quick final rinse. By washing the car on the lawn, your grass gets some water as well.
25
SHOWER BATH Replace the regular shower into low flow shower head.
This saves 7% of water usage.
26
SHOWER BATH Take a short shower rather than a bath could save you up to 400 litres a week. Instead of 15 minutes bath, take 10 – 12 minutes.
27
WATERING THE PLANT Always watering the plant before sun rise / sun set. Instead of running hose / use water rose Instead of fresh water, use recycled water from kitchen
28
Toilet Tank Leakage Detection
A silent leak in a toilet can waste 225 litres or more a day. Check toilets for silent leaks by placing a few drops of food colouring in the tank. Wait 15 minutes. If the colour appears in the bowl, you have a leak and should have it repaired.
33
WATER AUDIT A water audit can identify productive use and needless waste. The result - leaks identified, less water used, less money spent!
34
Water Audit Water Audit study is a qualitative and quantitative analysis of water consumption to identify means of reuse and recycling of water. This study includes segregation of effluent streams and schemes for effectively treating them to enable byproduct recovery. Water Audits encourage social responsibility by identifying wasteful use, enables estimation of the saving potential. They not only promote water conservation but also deliver cost savings.
