1 Figurative language notes
Take notes on the paper provided as we go through the PowerPoint.

2 Style The distinctive way in which a writer uses language.
Ranges from how they put sentences together to their choice of vocabulary and use of literary devices.

3 Figurative Language Language used by writers to produce images in readers' minds and to express ideas in fresh, vivid, and imaginative ways.

4 Metaphor A comparison between two things that are basically not alike.
In the comparison, one thing becomes another. Examples: When I was grounded my home was a prison. The silence during the Our Town test was music to our ears. You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare.

5 Simile A comparison between two things that are basically not alike using “like” or “as” to make the comparison. Examples: You make me smile like the sun…sing like a bird…spin like a record… Siblings fight like cats and dogs. Without my glasses I am as blind as a bat.

6 Personification The act of giving human qualities to something that is not human. Examples: The city was sleeping as I took my 3A.M. walk. The wind whispered softly in the night. Love bites, love bleeds It's bringin' me to my knees Love lives, love dies It's no surprise Love begs, love pleads

7 Alliteration The repetition of similar consonant sounds within a phrase or sentence. Examples: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood. “Little darling, It's been a long cold lonely winter”

8 Repetition The act of repeating words or phrases for dramatic effect.
Example “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am. I would not like them in a house…” “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end.” “And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed…

9 Sensory details Images and/or details that emphasize our senses.
sight, sound, smell, taste, and/or touch. Example: The trash has been sitting there so long that the smell overpowers everything else. It smells like feet mixed with B.O. I took a bite, and the sticky sweetness of the jelly made my mouth water.   I pulled the itchy wool blanket over my head.
