2 Trades Academy Youth Training: Overview
Partnership among Sheet Metal Union Local 19 Electrical Union IBEW NECA Laborers’ International Union of North America LIUNA, Oregon and Southern Idaho District Council of Laborers Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 290 Lane Community College Lane Education Service District Supported in part by Revitalization Grant from Oregon Department of Education Benefits to Students Authentic experience with application process Can earn bonus points for apprenticeship application Hands-on learning experience at registered apprenticeship training center Networking with industry professionals Direct exposure to “world of work,” employment readiness skills Connection with High school classes highly relevant to trades: Math, CTE

3 Trades Academy Youth Training: Timeline
November 25th, 2014 Open House at Plumbers Training Center Local 290 60 attendees Representatives from Sheet Metal, Electrical, Plumbers and Steamfitters, ODOT Overview of courses and application process December 12th, 2014 Applications due to Lane ESD 36 applications received December 16th, 2014 Lane Community College Apprenticeship Open House 140 students from 15 high schools and high school credit issuing programs in Lane County. December 19th, 2014 Interview notifications sent to students. January 7-9, 2015 Applicant interviews Interviews held at participating schools, panel of three interviewers, approximately 10 minute interviews. 34 of 36 applicants completed the interview process

January 13th, 2015 Acceptance notification sent to successful applicants Details of placement, location, etc. Some course placement changes based on preference, etc. Includes high school students from: Cottage Grove, Creswell, Kalapuya, Oakridge, Pleasant Hill, Springfield, South Eugene, and Thurston January 6th – March 5th, 2015 “Introduction to Advanced Technology” at LCC held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5:00 PM. 11 students. February 3rd – March 12th, 2015* Trades Academy Youth Training courses held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-4:30 PM. 95% completion rate March 12th, 2015 Field experience: Students tour Fairfield Elementary School with instructors and Trade Union representatives. Overview given by ESSEX General Construction. Tours lead by specific on site crew leaders. Electrical, Sheetmetal, and plumbing Pictures: Constructioned4me.org

Suggestions for Best practices Find out if there is a Trades Academy already underway in your community. Contact your local Training Centers Show there is interest in the Trades Academies Identify students who may be interested Lane County Critical Mass = 36 students +/- Work with the Training Centers to Develop the Academy “Many Hands Make Light(er) Work. “ Designate one “go to” contact at your school/organization Facilitate student applications Troubleshoot transportation/schedules early Encourage students to develop their skills outside of class and to learn the best ways to showcase those skills.
