QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
WHO ARE WEMYSS VINTAGE MALTS? Wemyss Vintage Malts are a family run independent bottler of Scotch whisky established in Utilising years of experience from blending French wine the Wemyss family craft blended Scotch whisky and blended malts from carefully selected stocks. Each of the blended Scottish malt is named from the flavours and aromas that can be found in the whisky. Wemyss Malts also bottle Lord Elcho Blended Scotch, a variety of rare single cask single malts and Darnley’s View Gin. In Late 2014 Wemyss Malts opened Kingsbarns Distillery in the Kingdom of Fife which will release a classic lowland malt as of mid-2018. WHAT IS A BLENDED MALT? Blended malt is defined by The Scottish Whisky Association as: “A blend of single malt Scotch whiskies, which have been distilled at more than one distillery” Our blended malts are carefully crafted combinations of up to 10 single malt whiskies. They can be categorised into 2 key elements: CORE MALTS – These consist of one more single malt Scottish whiskies combined to create the base of the blend. Support malts can then be added to the blend (usually peaty or heavy in body.) SIGNATURE MALTS – These consist of one or single malt Scottish whiskies from a specific region of Scotland chosen for their unique character to ‘dress’ the blend into a distinctive character. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM A BLENDED SCOTCH? Blended Scotch is defined by The Scottish Whisky Association as: “A blend of one more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies.” Wemyss Blended Malts do not use any grain whisky only quality single malt Scotch whisky as their ingredients. WHAT DOES BATCH STRENGTH MEAN? At Wemyss Vintage Malts we refer to batch strength as the final resting alcohol by volume of a whisky when combining one or more casks together or the final strength once the whisky has been reduced with water. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT TO CASK STRENGTH? Cask strength refers to the natural unreduced strength of a whisky drawn from a single cask of whisky. Most whiskies (both single malt and blended) are a combination of many casks and are commonly reduced from their natural strength. HOW MANY BOTTLES WILL BE IN EACH BATCH? Every batch may vary due to the amount of casks, volume of liquid in the casks and the final strength of the whisky. WHAT SIZE OF BOTTLE ARE THE BATCH STRENGTH BOTTLED IN? Wemyss blended malt batch strength, batch 001 is bottled in 700ml. Future batches may be available in different sizes. WHEN WILL THE WEMYSS BLENDED MALTS, BATCH STRENGTH – LIMITED EDITION BE AVAILABLE FROM? They will be available to ship from mid-October 2016 from a variety of spirits retailers in the UK, Europe, America and Asia. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF NON CHILL-FILTERED? A non chill-filtered whisky has not been filtered between -10˚ and 4˚ Celsius and passed through layers of paper filters to remove fatty acids, proteins and esters that may cloud the whisky at low temperatures when served with ice. Wemyss Malts believe their blended malts should be bottled non chill-filtered to retain its natural glory! QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
