The Righteous Man “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish” (Psalm 1:1-6).

The Righteous Man His Path
5
His Path 1) Doesn’t behave like the wicked.
“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful” (v. 1).
6
His Path Counsel – “counsel, including both deliberation and the purpose of doing anything” (Wilson, p. 98). Path – “A masculine noun meaning path, journey, way…However, this word is most often used metaphorically to refer to the pathways of one’s life, suggesting the pattern of life” (The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament). Scornful – “to deride, or to mock any one; a mocker, scoffer, scorner, i.e. a frivolous and impudent person, who sets at nought and scoffs at the most sacred precepts and duties of religion, piety, and morals” (Wilson, p. 372).
7
His Path 2) Seeks counsel from God. Words of Eliphaz to Job:
“Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you. Receive, please, instruction from His mouth, And lay up His words in your heart” (Job 22:21-22).
8
His Path 3) He allows the Spirit to direct.
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Romans 8:12-14). “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).
9
The Righteous Man His Path His Pleasure
10
His Pleasure 1) That which he loved.
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night” (v. 2). Delight – “A masculine noun meaning delight, pleasure, desire, matter. The root idea is to incline toward something… The word also refers to people’s delight in God’s Law” (The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament).
11
His Pleasure 2) You can learn much about yourself by noting what you find pleasure in! 3) Does sinful things bring you joy? “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).
12
His Pleasure 4) Is it things that hinder you from putting God first you delight in? “Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity” (Luke 8:14).
13
His Pleasure 5) Or, do you like the Psalmist, find pleasure in spiritual things? “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). “I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8).
14
The Righteous Man His Path His Pleasure His Success
15
His Success 1) Notice the contrast.
“He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish” (vv. 3-6).

17
His Success 2) May not be in this world.
“But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried… But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented” (Luke 16:20-22,25).
18
His Success 3) The joys of eternal bliss.
“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord” (Matthew 25:21). “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14).

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
21
The Righteous Man You can choose: (1) The path of sinners (Ps. 1:1) or the word that lights one’s path (Ps. 119:105). (2) The pleasures of sin (Heb. 11:25) or delight in the law of the Lord (Ps. 1:2). (3) Your choice will either cause you to perish (Ps. 1:6) or to prosper (Ps. 1:3). Ungodly Righteous
