11 Approved content For newsletters/releases/internal comms
Please use our approved copy: The Royal Mint is currently producing 1.5 billion new £1 coins at a rate of up to 2,000 each minute and a staggering three million in total every day. As some of the new coins will be made from the old round £1 coins, the UK public are being encouraged to spend, return or donate their old £1 coins so that they can be melted down and reused to make the new coins. The Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme is being introduced on 6 April and will allow a Gift Aid style top-up payment for cash donations in situations where it would be difficult to get a Gift Aid declaration from a donor – for example in a High Street collecting tin. The total amount of donations charities can claim a top-up payment on each year, is increasing from £5,000 to £8,000 in April 2017. ……………………………………………………………………………………………...... New 12-sided £1 Coin

12 Facts and stats ……………………………………………………………………………………………......
There are around 300 million £1 coins in savings jars in the UK Some of the round £1 coins returned by the public will be melted down and reused to make the new £1 coin. The Royal Mint will make over 1.5 billion of the new £1 coins. The Royal Mint has produced over 2.2 billion round pound coins since 1983 – that’s the same weight as nearly 6,000 elephants. If you put all the new £1 coins side by side, there would be enough to go from the UK to New Zealand and back. Each days production of new £1 coins would be taller than Mount Everest if they were stacked on top of each other. The Royal Mint began production of the new £1 coin in 2016 so you will find new £1 coins with both the 2016 and 2017 date. ……………………………………………………………………………………………...... New 12-sided £1 Coin
