2 Objectives Students will read Act 3 of Romeo and Juliet (P 4.1)
Students will relate our previous discussion of patriarchy to the idea of a Feminist reading (I 1.1) Students will work with each other to find textual evidence for their reading of female characters through a feminist lens (MC 5.1)

Different lenses where readers can analyze literature and art. A few of the lenses are: Moral/Philosophical Historical/Biographical Formalist Rhetorical Freudian Feminist Marxist Bridging English 4th ed.

6 Feminist Literary Criticism
Originated in the 1960s Arose to name and combat gender divisions that affect the legal, economic, and social lives of women Especially sensitive to the image of women characters in texts written predominantly by men, place of women writers in the canon, the differing responses of men and women to literature, and the different ways that men and women use language Use tools from history, psychology, linguistics, and sociology to analyze works

7 Thinking about women in Romeo and Juliet
Do any of the female characters have a leading role? Do any of them have destinies other than securing a husband? Is this woman’s existence always anchored in another person? Do any female characters possess independent, active, original, expressive souls?

8 And the Award goes to… You have the task of coming up with awards/ superlatives for 2 female characters, while keeping our lesson on feminism in mind. You will find 1-2 quotes that the character has spoken that justify this award/superlative (you can also provide brief recaps of situations that justify the award)
