2. The Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding (2002)
The UN Millennium summit in 2000 agreed on 8 MDGs, the MDG 4 is to reduce by two third the mortality rate among children under five, the year 2015.
WHA adopted the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding in May 2002 and UNICEF Executive Board endorsed it in September The WHA urges member states as a matter of urgency to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate a plan of action on IYCF.
In the year 2005, Innocenti declaration on infant and young child feeding calls for action on many areas including identifying and allocating sufficient resources to fully implement actions called for in the global strategy for infant and young child feeding.

3. Lens for monitoring progress on implementation of GSIYCF
Analysis shows it is possible to increase breastfeeding rates if policy and programmes are put in place and WBTi has been found to be a valid tool to predict success.
