and the impact of globalization upon the state.

5 Democratization The development of liberal democracy.
The extension of democracy and social citizenship rights.

6 Forms of Government Different forms of liberal democratic government.
The relationship between legislative, executive and judicial power. Presence (or lack) of women in legislatures.

7 Forms of Public Participation
Elections and referenda. Interest groups and social movements. Participation is shaped by interests, institutions, political opportunities and political culture within a given political community.

8 Fall Exam Information Part A:
You must identify and explain six terms. You must define and explain the term and also explain the broader significance of the term for comparative politics in the context of our course. As a general guideline, you should write approximately 2 paragraphs on each term.

9 Fall Exam Information Part B:
You must answer three of the five questions. As a general guideline, you should write approximately 3-5 paragraphs for each of your short answers. These questions will focus generally on the same material covered by the terms in Part A.

10 Fall Exam Information Part B:
These questions ask you to explain in more detail (or in a more specific way) the terms from Part A. Or they ask you to relate various terms to each other. Or they ask you to explain the influence of various terms. Examples of the kind of question (i.e., not actual exam questions): How does a confederation differ from a federation? What is the relationship between federalism and nationalism? How does the political opportunity structure influence the emergence of social movement activism? What is the relationship between electoral systems and voter turnout?
