Selection Two main categories:
Garden Roses -valued for their flowers Hybrid teas (most common rose in home gardens), floribundas, grandifloras, and climbers Landscape Roses – shrub roses and groundcover roses low maintenance grown on their own stock (not grafted) Select pest and disease resistant varieties
3
Pruning General Guidelines Remove dead, damaged or diseased wood
Keep shrub from becoming a tangled mess Shape the plant Increase air circulation Removal of 1/3 to 2/3 healthy wood OK Encourage growth of flowering wood Cut ¼” above outward facing buds
4
Pruning cont. Prune in January Clean sharp tools Dormant or sulfur
spray after pruning BY-PASS PRUNERS
5
Remove growth below bud union
Pruning cont. Hybrids Prune annually 3-5 canes Vase shape Remove growth below bud union
6
Pruning cont. Landscape Roses Climbing Roses
Leave unpruned or do “rejuvenation” pruning Miniatures can be mowed or “headed” Climbing Roses Wait 2-3 years after planting Select ~6 well-spaced canes Attach to support – remove others January – remove unproductive canes Cut lateral shoots back to 3 buds
7
Pruning Deadheading Reduce disease Improve circulation
8
#1 Disease & Pest Problems
Limit problems by purchasing disease-resistant varieties; give good air circulation; place in the right location; use sound pruning techniques; remove infestations immediately.
9
Powdery Mildew White-grey powdery growth Spreads by airborne spores
Controlled by disrupting daily spore cycle -spray wash foliage in the a.m. Prevention method -4 tsp.baking soda per gallon with 1% solution of horticultural oil (JMS Stylet Oil; Saf-T-Side Spray Oil, Sunspray Ultrafine Spray Oil; neem oil; jojoba oil)
10
Aphids Red, green, yellow, or black soft-bodied insects
Black color on leaves with an accu-mulation of honeydew and sooty mold if heavy infestation Natural predators: lady beetles; soldier beetles; syrphid flies Control Strong stream of water in a.m., soaps & oils Insecticide : acephate (Orthene)
