1 Additional hardware components, and Embedded Systems

2 Starter Pre-reading recap
What does the motherboard do? How can additional hardware be used to improve the performance of a computer? What does a soundcard do? What is RAM? What is it used for? What are the advantages of having dedicated GPU over integrated? What is the difference between RAM and ROM Explain what is meant by the term ‘embedded system’ What is the difference between hardware and software? What is the CPU? What does the CPU do? What are the 3 main components of the CPU?

3 Learning Intentions and Outcomes
Learning Intention: To develop an understanding of additional computer hardware, and to develop an in depth understanding of embedded systems Describe the characteristics and role of additional hardware, including GPU, sound cards and motherboards. Describe the use and give examples of embedded systems.

4 Additional Hardware Components
The exam board state that you should know what the following pieces of hardware are used for: Motherboard Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) Integrated GPU Dedicated GPU Sound Cards

5 Motherboard The motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer. The CPU and ROM will be mounted on the motherboard, which also provides RAM expansion slots, USB ports, PCI slots for expansion cards and controllers for devices such as the hard drive, DVD drive, keyboard, and mouse.

6 Graphics Processor Unit
A GPU is a microprocessor that performs the calculations needed to produce graphic images on screen. Initially the CPU performed these calculations, but as more complex applications were developed, such as 3D graphics and video quality animations, the GPU was introduced to offload those tasks from the CPU. GPUs can be integrated within the circuitry of the motherboard, or provided on a dedicated graphics card.

7 Graphics Processor Unit
Integrated GPU Dedicated GPU An integrated GPU uses the computer’s RAM. An integrated unit is cheaper than installing a dedicated GPU, it generates less heat and uses less power. They are perfect for general graphics processing such as watching or editing videos and word processing. A dedicated GPU has its own video memory. Dedicated cards provide the best visual experience and are used by people such as professional graphic designers and serious gamers, but they use more power and require a good cooling system.

8 Sound Cards Sound cards may be on board (on the motherboard) or designed to fit a PCI slot. They enable the computer to output sound through speakers, to record sound from a microphone and to manipulate sound stored on a disk. Sound cards convert analogue input signals into digital data and reverse this process for audio output.

9 Embedded Systems: Definition
An embedded system is a combination of software and hardware that performs a specific task rather than a general-purpose computer that is designed to carry out multiple tasks. Embedded systems are included as a part of a complete device often with hardware and mechanical parts. As the systems carry out specific tasks they can be designed to be small and have a low cost. Mass-production of embedded systems can save large amounts of money.

10 Graded Exercises You must complete the grade 4 exercises before you move on. You can use the pre-reading, PowerPoint, Internet, or the Help! Folder to help you complete the grade 4 exercises. When you have completed grade 4 you can move on to the grade 5-8 exam questions. (You will need to print these). Remember to be smart when using the Internet: Wikipedia is often complicated – sometimes even I don’t understand! BBC Bitesize, Teach ICT, and Revision World are better places to find your information!

11 Crib Sheet – What I must remember about ___
Starting Point: Read the learning outcomes from the exam board Record the key facts that you need to remember about the additional hardware components we have studied today. Record a definition of embedded systems and provide examples of simple embedded systems to help you remember. Think about what you have learnt today, what questions you have been asked, definitions of words, or anything else you think is important!
