1 VISITOR INVOLVEMENT IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH @ SCIENCE GALLERY DUBLIN
Afternoon - Jane - E&LM at Science Gallery Dublin give try to give some insight into SGD experience of collaborative research at SGD and hopefully some practical advice that can be relevant for DIY straight of the bat I am going to warn you that I will talk more about researchers than visitors – hopefully that will make sense in a min or two! I should also start by acknowledging that a lot of what I will speak about today is the work of one of my Colleagues - SOB who not able to join today. As our research coordinator Shaun has been doing some really interesting work collaborating the Biomedical Sciences Institute in TCD to explore new ways to connect visitors with the latest biomedical research Jane Chadwick Education and Learning Manager @SciGalleryDub VISITOR INVOLVEMENT IN SCIENTIFIC SCIENCE GALLERY DUBLIN

2 SCIENCE GALLERY DUBLIN
Opened 2008 – as a porous membrane for TCD 400,000 + visitors p/a Thematic + Transdisciplinary: Wicked Problems meet ART/SCIENCE Dynamic programme = Exhibitions + > 100 events + education programmes Target yr olds – Edgy? Democratic-ish? – Free entry + Open Call + Community - Before I do that for those of you that don’t know us - SGD space in Dublin, opened in 2008 as a place for dialogue discussion around future challenges/wicked problems - Important things to note - we are art/science, we target 15+, we are thematic with no permanent collection, we are “democratic-ish”. we need people - Leonardos, mediators, collaborators, curators, etc. etc.

3 LAB IN THE GALLERY DO YOU FEEL LUCKY? Huge appetite from visitors - Over 35,000 individual research experiments since 2008 Huge data sets for researchers = research papers + academic reviews So this close collaboration with a research instutte has really grown out of several years of work: - Since opening in 2008 Science Gallery Dublin piloted and refined a platform for involving visitors in scientific research in the Gallery – through our 'Lab in the Gallery' programmes, These programmes started out as short exhibitions with associated events and education programmes that showcase real research and invite visitors to get involved in work on compelling themes – Happyness, love This format seemed to be working in that there was huge appetite from visitors to get involved and huge data sets for researchers beyond what they could generate themselves. Eveyone is happy right!?

4 Yes but – - the containment of this research activity in “the lab exhibition” felt a little off and given public appetite - Mutated into “researchers in residence for LL and research elements in nearly every exhibition since then

5 So this is an example of that mutation – the Community Biolab as part of GYO
Scientists and biohackers in residence – vistitors take part in processes of Science

6 Our dedicated lab series have become more like “scientists in residence” – here you can see a researcher working with a visitor in a residency for Life logging

7 Which attributes are important in a food system?

8 LIVE RESEARCH #PROTIPS
HAVE AN END GAME – A NEED FOR DATA MAKE SURE IT WORKS – IF IT DOESN’T – SHARE THAT TOO #SCIENCE! DO IT WITH OTHERS!

9 CITIZEN SCIENCE Exploring the potential of citizen science
- We neeed researchers – we have them on our doorstep in TCD. New fresh ideas and faces – audience development with researchers Collaboration with TBSI supported by WT - put together a a series of public engagement workshops for researchers content draing from the Science Gallery programme Idea being that we could provide researchers with the skills but also crucially the outlet to test out those skills in the Gallery CITIZEN SCIENCE Exploring the potential of citizen science
