HOW 2 BLEND PAINT TO GET THE COLOR YOU WANT?
BEGIN WITH PLACING A SMALL AMOUNT OF PAINT (ONE COLOR) INTO A BOWL ON THE PAINTING PALETTE PLACE WHITE PAINT IN THE BOWL NEXT TO YOUR START COLOR PLACE A VERY TINY AMOUNT OF BLACK IN THE BOWL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR START COLOR. YOU DO NOT NEED VERY MUCH PAINT IN YOUR PALETTE BOWLS! PLEASE DO NOT BE WASTEFUL.
13
MAKING LIGHTER COLORS FROM YOUR START COLOR
GRAB A TINY AMOUNT OF YOUR START COLOR & PLACE INTO AN OPEN BOWL ON YOUR PALETTE GRAB A TINY AMOUNT OF WHITE AND MIX INTO THE BOWL WITH YOUR TINY AMOUNT OF START COLOR ADD MORE WHITE TO EACH START COLOR IN A NEW BOWL TO CONTINUE MAKING LIGHTER SHADES CONTINUE THIS STEP UNTIL YOU HAVE A 1-5 VALUE SCALE OF YOUR START COLOR IN THE PALETTE BOWLS
14
MAKING DARKER COLORS FROM YOUR START COLOR
GRAB A TINY AMOUNT OF YOUR START COLOR & PLACE INTO AN OPEN BOWL ON YOUR PALETTE GRAB A TINY AMOUNT OF BLACK (OR ANOTHER SHADE OF YOUR START COLOR) & MIX INTO THE BOWL WITH YOUR TINY AMOUNT OF START COLOR ADD MORE BLACK TO EACH START COLOR IN A NEW BOWL TO CONTINUE MAKING DARKER SHADES CONTINUE THIS STEP UNTIL YOU HAVE A 6-10 VALUE SCALE OF YOUR START COLOR IN THE PALETTE BOWLS
15
TEST TEST TEST!!! ALWAYS TEST OUT YOUR COLORS ON ANOTHER SHEET OF SCRATCH PAPER (SKETCHBOOK PAPER) BEFORE PAINTING WITH YOUR MIXED COLORS! TESTING ON ANOTHER SHEET DURING THE MIXING PROCESS CAN ALSO HELP WITH MAKING SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE 3 OR 4 COLORS THAT LOOK THE EXACT SAME IN VALUE. CONTINUE TO ADD WHITE, BLACK, OR EVEN OTHER SHADES WITHIN THE SAME FAMILY TO VARY YOUR SHADES (I.E. TO GET TEAL ADD A TINY BIT OF GREEN TO BLUE - THEN ADD WHITE TO ALTER THE LIGHTNESS OF THE COLOR).
16
A PICTURE EXAMPLE OF A PAINTING VALUE SCALE
PRACTICE A FEW VALUE SCALES WITH A FEW DIFFERENT COLORS. I WOULD SUGGEST ATTEMPTING NON-PRIMARY COLORS AS WELL.
