Many men (18 or over) joined and fought for their country – we won. Women played an important part too, they did all the men’s jobs and worked in hospitals like Florence Nightingale. It wasn’t a very nice place to be…

Charles Cook Was born in 1867 Died in September 1917 from wounds
Lived on Springfield Road Died when he was aged 50 Mother and father were James and Sarah Cook He earned the Copley medal award Enlisted in 1896 He was in the Essex and Northamptonshire regiment

Edward Cook Was born in 1891 Died in He was captured by the Turkish and died as a prisoner. Lived in Springfield Road Died at the age of 26 Mother and father were Charles and Elizabeth Cook He also earned a Copley medal award He enlisted at age 24 He was in the Essex regiment
