Sport Psychology To help skill acquisition
2
Goal Setting… Goal-setting is an important part of skill acquisition/refinement. Must be S.M.A.R.T goals Use moderately difficult goals Write goals down and steps to achieve them Use short-term goals to help you achieve a long term goal

Visualisation Many elite athletes routinely use visualization techniques as part of training and competition. Visualization has also been called guided imagery, mental rehearsal, mediation, and a variety of other things -- no matter the term, the basic techniques and concepts are the same. visualization is the process of creating a mental image or intention of what you want to happen or feel.

Visualisation continued…
An athlete can use this technique to 'intend' an outcome of a race or training session, or simply to rest in a relaxed feeling of calm and well-being. By imagining a scene, complete with images of a previous best performance or a future desired outcome, the athlete is instructed to simply 'step into' that feeling. While imagining these scenarios, the athlete should try to imagine the detail and the way it feels to perform in the desired way. These scenarios can include any of the senses. They can be visual (images and pictures), kinesthetic (how the body feels), or auditory (the roar of the crowd). With mental rehearsal, minds and bodies become trained to actually perform the skill imagined. Research is finding that both physical and psychological reactions in certain situations can be improved with visualization. Such repeated imagery can build both experience and confidence in an athlete's ability to perform certain skills under pressure, or in a variety of possible situations.

Self-talk… We have messages flying through our head all day long… mostly negative things like shooting you down when you do something wrong. In sports psychology, the goal is to replace the negative self talk with more positive messages. A basketball player shooting free-throws who tells himself, "I’m not going to make this basket," will need to practice replacing that negative statement with a positive "I’m going to make this shot." This may not seem like it can work, but over time and with repetition an athlete can develop a new habit of thinking positive statements and thoughts and expect a more positive outcome.

Your task… Find three images/videos of your chosen sport and identify where each of these three sport psych methods are being used. If you have used one already in your practice, add it to your write up If you haven’t yet used one, brainstorm how you could use them and plan how you will try them out tomorrow. You can comment on their effectiveness after tomorrow’s practical session.
