3 Why is Independent Reading Required?
Many studies have shown that reading a lot is the one activity that consistently increases students’ scores on reading-related skills. Children who read series develop deeper reading fluency and language skills and a better understanding of story structure. Light reading motivates children to read more and to choose more difficult books. Reading a lot makes children better writers because they get to see models of good writing in different genres. When children choose their own books to read, they are more likely to want to read more. Children who read a lot feel more confident as readers. Childhood reading predicts life-long reading. Reading for pleasure increases general knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

4 What is Accelerated Reading?

6 How does your child select a book?
First your child's independent reading level is determined. Teachers or the librarian determine your child’s reading level in one of three ways: a STAR ReadingTM test, a grade- equivalent score from a standardized test, or using their best professional judgment based on their knowledge of your child.

7 Choose From More Than 125,000 Quizzes with AR Only Accelerated Reader Enterprise offers unlimited access to more than 125,000 quizzes.

8 Minimum AR Reading Time Daily = 20 minutes

9 Students use Karns City's library to access books.
arbookfind.com. After selecting a book, students check AR Book Finder to see if the book has an AR test. The website also provides the book's AR points and book level.
