Do you ALWAYS… 1. get your message across clearly 2. listen to what others are saying 3. keep the lines of communication open Interpersonal communication: the exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between two or more people. This is a learned skill and it must be practiced to be effective. Very important skill that you use in ALL your relationships

Speaking Skills Make clear, simple statements Maintain eye contact Be honest with your feelings Use appropriate body language Use “I” messages Active Listening: hearing, thinking about and responding to another person’s message Give speaker feedback Maintain eye-contact Ask questions Refrain from interrupting Use appropriate body language

Communication: More than just words
Body Language: a form of nonverbal communication. Encouraging body language * smiling * nodding of head * others?? Discouraging body language * frowning * slouched shoulders * arms folded Mixed Message: when your words say one thing, but your body says another

Forms of Communication
We surveyed 100 teens and asked them the following question, “Name a way that we communicate with another person.” The top 6 answers will be accepted. The top answers are… * texting (48) * call on phone (21) * Instagram (12) * e mail(8) * Face to face (6) * Facebook (5)

Communication Roadblocks
Insulting: saying something to purposely make the other person feel bad. Sarcasm: saying the opposite of what you really mean to achieve an insulting effect. Globalizing: Making a complaint seem worse by exaggerating. Mind Reading: assuming you know what the other person is thinking. Blaming: focusing on whose fault something is, instead of looking for a solution. Name Calling
