How Earth Day got started
The History of Earth Day Earth Day got started in 1963 when Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying. He wondered why more people weren't trying to solve these problems. He talked to the President and they decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but not enough people were working on the problem. Then, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the schools and put special articles in Magazines to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would be very helpful.) On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the earth. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn't it great? One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it. See what happens when people care about our world?

3 R’s The Three R’s Reuse: Reduce: Recycle:
Try not to buy a new product. Try and use the one you already have. Reduce: Only take the amount you will use. Try to use stuff so you have trash to get rid of later. Recycle: Use products that can be reused. Place recyclable in the recycling bin.

_____________________________ 1. Glooze Ingredients: 7 Tbsp Skim milk, 1 Tbsp. Vinegar filter, 1/4 baking soda ________________ Formula Let skim milk warm to room temperature. While stirring slowly add vinegar and continue stirring for several minutes. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes. Pour off and discard any excess liquid. Pour the remaining solid into the filter and let drain. Add baking soda to the solid and stir. Now you are ready to start gloozin! 4. Power Putty 2 Tbsp. White glue, 1/2 Tbsp. Water 1/2 Tbsp. Liquid starch Place water and liquid starch into a mixing bowl. Add 1 Tbsp of white glue, stir for one more minute, then let stand for several minutes. A Putty-like substance will form. For best results, squeeze the putty through your hands to dry it off and to get an incredibly gross feeling on your finger. Note: White glue such as Elmer’s glue will work. Glue is actually a polymer called poly ethyl acetate. 2. Sewer Slime Ingredients: 1/4 tsp. Guar gum, water 1/4 tsp. Sodium tetraborate ________________ Formula Measure 7 Tbsp. Of water into a mixing bowl. Add guar gum to water slowly, while stirring. Let the mixture sit for several minutes. In a separate bowl add sodium tetraborate to 1 Tbsp. Water and stir for several minutes. Slowly add 1/2 tsp. Of the sodium tetraborate solution to the guar gum solution. Mix together well, then let stand until it forms a gel. Yucck! Note: Sodium tetraborate is also known as Borax, (laundry detergent) available at your local drug store. 3. Flip-Flop Slime 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1/4 of warm water food coloring, mixing bowl Place the cornstarch in a mixing bowl. Add water and stir. The mixture will become difficult to mix. Continue mixing until thoroughly blended, or until your arm gets really tired and falls off, whichever comes first. Note: Liquid starch is a starch mixed with enough water so the mixture is still in a liquid solution.

Natures Recycles (workers)
I give off chemicals that break down rocks and wood. I dig tunnels that let air and water into the ground We break decaying matter to small pieces I suck food out of decaying plant and animals and return it to the soil We turn small pieces of decaying matter into the basic ingredients found in the soil I soften decaying matter, making it easier for nature’s recyclers to eat

Natures Recycles (clean up)
We clean up and recycle in the forest. We can’t clean up after you. You can help us by recycling your cans, bottles, plastics and paper ...
