Perspective LCLS II is the big BES project at this time, The project is well supported by the DOE/BES with funding, decision making, and all the help it needs. One of the critical technologies for the project is the cryogens plant which includes two 4 kW 2K helium refrigerators. The 4.5 K Cold Boxes are the heart of these refrigerators and as such get a lot of attention and scrutiny by the project. 4.5 K Cold Box Schedule Recovery Directors’ Review, 16 November, 2016

Perspective – Why we are here
Even with this team, over the course of this year we have had a series of missed milestones and eventual a slip on the delivery date for the cold boxes. This has become the major issue for the project as the first cold box is needed for the major milestone “First Light”. Delaying First Light can not happen. At this time the 4.5 K Cold Box delivery is the absolute #1 concern for the project. The DOE Office of Performance Assessment has recently reviewed the project and this contract was front and center! In response to the schedule slip we have already taken several steps to understand the past problems and have looked forward to what we need to do to recover the original schedule. The baseline delivery date for the first cold box is 11 September, 2017 and the schedule had been as delayed as far out as ~20 January, The efforts to date has resulted in considerable recovery of the schedule. The ALATUS schedule shows multiple scenarios that result in the 1st cold box being delivered on a schedule that supports the first light milestone date. 4.5 K Cold Box Schedule Recovery Directors’ Review, 16 November, 2016
