3 Recap Quiz What are ‘contemporary issues’?
What would we call a ‘good’ source of information for your topic? What is the difference between England and Britain? What is a ‘curriculum’? Which of the topic choices does not need you to understand about ED&I? What are ‘contemporary issues’? What would we call a ‘good’ source of information for your topic? What is the difference between England and Britain? What is a ‘curriculum’? Which of the topic choices does not need you to understand about ED&I? all need it, link to LO on previous slide because all families are different I suggest prizes and scoring as they seem to like this.

4 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
On your own, spend a couple of minutes writing down what is meant by E, D&I in Early Years Now in pairs decide on one definition Now in groups so that you have the best definition that you can and be ready to share this with the class. Discuss how this might impact upon your chosen topic. Once they have done this ask them to share them with the class and ask questions around the range of different parents that they have to work with. Also ask for their experiences for example relating this to the news story about asking parents not to turn up in pyjamas, allowing their children to urinate in the playground or smoking dope at the school gate. Ask them if there might be another reason why there seems to be so many stories like this at the moment and whether or not they might be serving the Government’s agenda. Have things really got so much worse recently?

5 Working in Partnership
What is a partnership? What do you notice about the wording of Learning Outcome 4 in your handbook? What happens if it is different from their parents’? MOVE TO TOPIC GROUPS of about 3 (join topics if there are people alone) Discussion in their topic groups. What is a partnership: remind them about all of the different families they talked about in the last activity and also the power relationship. The wording says ‘children and their families’ so how do we include the children’s voice? How do we include the children’s voice?

6 The Scottish Curriculum for Excellence
Education Scotland is the national body in Scotland for supporting quality and improvement in learning and teaching. In your groups and using the laptops find this and investigate the sections. There are some good videos embedded here too. Be prepared to feed your findings back to the group. Give them some time to really get to know the curriculum before the next activity.

7 Comparison Activity Think back to the activity in the last session where you looked at the EY curriculum in England from 0-5 Using different coloured pens see if you can map the significant ages and stages onto the same map making it clear which one is the Scottish Curriculum and which the English. Then see if you can make notes about how your topic might fit into this Give them a good bit of time for this.

8 Plenary What do you think might be the best way to really work in partnership with the children and parents? Outline 5 main differences between the two curricula How does your topic fit into these? a) Non judgemental and listening to them
