The Confusing World of Choosing Books

Choosing the Correct Book Level
Five Finger Rule Goldilocks Rule 2 minutes Is your child in grades 2-8? If so, ask your child’s teacher about his/her ZPD.

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
ZPD = A reading level range for students. ZPD example = Knowing the ZPD can help children select books that will help them grow as readers (without being frustrated). 2 minutes

Reading with Children Set aside a regular time for reading.
Make reading an enjoyable, positive experience. Maintain the flow. If your child mispronounces a word, allow opportunity for self-correction Talk about and ask questions about what your child has read. Remember: success builds on success! 2 minutes

Tips for Making Reading Fun!
Take turns reading: You read a page, your child reads a page Change your voice to sound like characters in the book! For struggling readers, try Echo Reading. Both Parent and Child: Guess what will happen next and check to see who is correct! 6 minutes
