1 Personal, Social and Emotional Development in the Early Years Foundation Stage

2 The prime areas of learning (PSED, CL, PD) run through and support learning in all other areas
Fundamental – work together

3 PSED are 3 building blocks of future success in life
PSED are 3 building blocks of future success in life. They are closely linked to each other and often bracketed together as one a of l and d.

4 Introduction 1. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

5 Overarching principles
6. Four guiding principles should shape practice in early years settings. These are: • every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured; • children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships; • children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and • children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

6 The EYFS 7 areas of learning
Prime areas: Physical Development Communication and Language Development Personal, Social and Emotional Development Specific areas: Literacy Maths Understanding the World Expressive Arts

7 Characteristics of Effective Learning
In planning and guiding children’s activities, practitioners must reflect on the different ways that children learn and reflect these in their practice. Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are: • playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’; • active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements; and • creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

11 Making Links Children do not learn in straight lines. In the Early Years practitioners are encouraged to make links between areas of learning and allow children to learn in a more spaghetti like fashion!

14 Linking PSED and Literacy
Books can be a great starting point for group discussions and follow activities.

15 Planning PSED links using familiar stories.
Often referred to as ‘theory of mind’

16 The Snail and the Whale Themes: Going on a Journey Changing/growing up
Overcoming obstacles Helping others PSED Discussion points: What are our own goals? What would we like to achieve? What challenges are we facing and how could we overcome them? How can we help others who may be lost or in trouble? The Snail and the Whale Examples of possible links with other areas of learning: Create a story map of our own journey (Literacy) Make our own masks and puppets and re-enact the story (Expressive Arts and Design) Look at maps and take about where we would like to travel. Use non fiction books/the internet to find out about these places (Understanding the World)
