The founding of the Colombo Plan
The Colombo Plan was established in 1951 with 7 founding member countries based on the discussions at the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Conference held in Colombo in 1950.

History and Brief of The Colombo Plan
An international inter-governmental organisation Colombo Plan follows a partnership concept of self-help and mutual- help for socio-economic development of member countries Its membership has grown from the original 7 Commonwealth countries to 27, including non-Common wealth countries

Highlights: PPSD Capacity Building Program on “Enhancing the Development of Small and Medium Industry”, Ministry of Industry, Republic of Indonesia, 22-29, Oct, 2016 (22 participants from 12 countries) .

Highlights: Environment & Climate Change
International Training on Waste management and Renewable energy, KOICA, Korea, 20 Oct- 9 November, 2016 (16 participants from 8 countries). This was part of joint fellowship agreement between Colombo Plan and KOICA.

Highlights: PPA Collaboration with Sri Lanka on International Diplomatic Training, BIDTI, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sept, 2016 (30 participants). Colombo Plan cooperated in two national training events by BIDTI also.

Highlights: LTSP One Year Masters Programme on Public Policy and Management, By KDI School of Public Policy and Management, Korea, Dec November, students from Vietnam, Maldives and Sri Lanka selected for this course. Nepal offers Masters degree in International relations and Sri Lanka is also working on providing one slot each year on Economics. India offers several courses, fully sponsored.

International Training on Intellectual Property as a tool to enhance Competitiveness of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (IPC-MSMEs), by National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (NIMSME) , Hyderabad, India, 23 Jan- 10 Feb, participants from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Bhutan, Afghanistan & Malaysia took part. (A total of 150 slots allotted to Colombo Plan)

International Training on Agricultural Project Management by Kothari Agricultural Management Centre, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, India 01 February – 16 March, participants from CP Member countries took part.

International Training on Molecular biological techniques for research in agriculture and biomedical sciences, by Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), India, 3 February to 3 March, participants from 8 countries took part.

International Training on Trainers’ Training on Promotion of Self-Employment & Skill Development by National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), Noida, India, 20 March to 21 April, participants from 8 countries are taking part.

National Training events:
National Training on Small and Medium Enterprises for Youth and Women by Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Sri Lanka (FCCI-SL) in Chilaw, Puttalam, Sri Lanka, Feb, participants from across the island took part in the training. Another training on Youth entrepreneurship was held in Trincomalee earlier with 30 participants.

KOICA-Colombo Plan Joint Fellowship Program:
International On-Site Workshop on Waste Management in response to Climate Change, Colombo, by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Colombo Plan from 4-8 April, participants from 11 countries and 15 additional participants from Sri Lanka took part in the workshop which involved on-site training in Dompe Landfill too.

Programmes Ahead: International training on Post Harvest Technology for fruits and Vegetable crops for developing countries by TICA from 22 May- 2 June, 2017 is under preparation. International Conference on Environment & Climate Change by India is under preparation and scheduled for later part of Preliminary discussion with MEA done. Environment and Climate Change
Programme for Environment & Climate Change: Activities Ahead: Formation of Environmental Focal Points (Ministry of Environment in each member country to be involved) Inter-Governmental Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (expected to come out with a declaration and action plan on regional and in-country initiatives) National/ regional/ Community level Conference on Climate Change (to be supported by the national funds allocated by each country) Capacity Building Programmes (CP to undertake this task for member countries) Training in Waste Management with KOICA and NIEHRD (CP collaborate with KOICA for a three year MOU for capacity building of member states in waste management.) Education and awareness on Environment and Climate Change - Developing a School Curriculum on Environment and Climate Change (to nurture love for protecting environment right from elementary education) - Promotion of community based initiatives ( such as Plant a tree campaign, Gift a plant campaign, art camps, exhibitions, international painting/ photography competitions, Observing World Environment Day, etc.) * Developing an interactive Website (to showcase in-country initiatives at international level on climate change adaptation programmes) 19 19 19 19

Possibilities for Synergies:
All the programmes under PPA, PPSD, LTSP & ECC are Gender balanced and relevant to GAP Focal points to nominate participants.
