1 High School Mathematics Essentials
Silvia Aday, District instructional supervisor Carolina Zavala, Curriculum Support specialist RICARDO SINCLAIR, Curriculum Support specialist

2 Dear Mathematics Teachers:
Welcome back to school and Congratulations! The High School Mathematics team hopes you had a great summer. Your hard work and dedication this past school year brought success on many fronts. Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 FSA scores went up. The Graduation rate reached an all-time high of 80.4 percent, exceeding the average of other large Florida school districts. For the first time ever, there were no “F” schools as reported by the Florida Department of Education. Now, with the start of the school year, we have new opportunities and challenges to keep improving the lives and futures of Miami-Dade’s high school students. This PowerPoint presentation contains key information that will assist you with delivering the world-class education that our students deserve. Please, discuss the information presented in this PowerPoint during your first department meeting and share it electronically with your colleagues. First-year teachers will find this presentation extremely helpful. We are thankful for having such a talented and dedicated staff. Thank you so much, The High School Mathematics Team

3 In order to improve our communication with teachers during the school year, the High School Mathematics team will be ing teachers important information and/or updates related to High School Mathematics. If you want to be part of the High School Mathematics Distribution List, please complete the survey below:

4 Important Weekly Briefings

5 Suggested Course Sequence
Briefing ID #: 20989 Students scoring at Level 1 & 2 on the Grade 8 FSA Mathematics test, he or she should be concurrently enrolled in Algebra 1 and Intensive Mathematics Grade 9, or the student should receive academic support strategies through Algebra 1 (for first time Algebra 1 EOC test-takers). If a school is on the 4X4 schedule the Algebra 1A and 1B course code options may be utilized if the school follows all requirements as outlined in WB #19303. The Florida Department of Education has released the new Financial Algebra course for the school term, this new course is intended for students who have already taken Algebra 1 and Geometry but need additional instruction in content to prepare them for success in upper-level mathematics courses This course meets NCAA requirements and should be offered in lieu of Liberal Arts Mathematics 2 and not in addition to, thus the students’ cumulative mathematics credits should include one or the other but not both. Please note that the financial literacy standards in this course are repeated in the required12th grade Economics course for graduation with a standard high school diploma, therefore it is highly recommended that the Financial Algebra course be offered in 11th grade opposed to 12th grade. Liberal Arts Mathematics 2 does NOT meet NCAA requirements however, it is considered as a Core Math class for all Bright Futures Scholarships and the State University System (SUS) admissions. Trigonometry Honors (.5 Credit – 1st Semester) and Math Analysis Honors (.5 credit – 2nd Semester) preferably should be offered in this order and taken together to meet annual course requirements. All students that have NOT demonstrated College Readiness by 11th grade MUST take Math for College Readiness in 12th grade.

28 SAT Subject Test in Mathematics
Mathematics Pacing Guides SAT Subject Test in Mathematics The SAT Math Test covers a range of math practices, with an emphasis on problem solving, modeling, using tools strategically, and using algebraic structure. It’s About the Real World Instead of testing you on every math topic there is, the new SAT asks you to use the math that you’ll rely on most in all sorts of situations. Questions on the Math Test are designed to mirror the problem solving and modeling. Focus The Math Test will focus in depth on the three areas of math: Heart of Algebra, which focuses on the mastery of linear equations and systems. Problem Solving and Data Analysis, which is about being quantitatively literate. Passport to Advanced Math, which features questions that require the manipulation of complex equations. The Math Test also draws on Additional Topics in Math, including the geometry and trigonometry most relevant to college and career readiness. Algebra 2 and Upper Math Courses Official SAT Practice
