Marie Skłodowska Curie was a physicist and chemist
She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, the first person/woman honored with two Nobel Prizes, receiving one in physics and later, one in chemistry.
She was the first woman to serve as professor at the University of Paris..
She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw.
Her achievements include the creation of a theory of radioactivity (a term she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. Under her direction, the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasm (cancers), using radioactive isotopes.
What is another important aspect of the use of radioactivity that is very important today and is all thanks to Marie?

*Scientific advancement-insulin, penicillin, insecticides…
*But…many people suffer hunger in part because food production geared for mass markets may ignore local needs,
….and pollution, overcrowded issues , menial jobs are still topics of issue today
Have students list some of the innovations in communication that have changed over the last 5-10 years.
Examples of scientific advances: insulin, penicillin, and insecticides
Examples of transportation: air travel, trucks, cars etc.

We’ve seen how cities will change, and the issues that government will have to get involved in to fix, from child labor to pollution to building regulations to city protection and the first police ******************************* But what about the economy itself? Was the government involved in how the economy was ran? What ideas would the Industrial Revolution bring to the thought of economy and how it should be ran? Be successful? ****************************** Well….There were 2 big economic writers from the Industrial Revolution period of history….One thought that the government should stay out of the economy…the other thought it should be in charge of the economy for the betterment of the people as a whole.
