(make sure your Ind. Rev. Lesson Sheet is on your desk)
Another major, you could argue, #13 positive effect of this era on your Lesson Sheet…..was the Scientific Advancement due to The Industrial Revolution and the new ideas of Mass Production Warm up And Recap #4 Can you identify the following individuals and what they are known for during the Industrial Revolution Period? Marie Curie- Thomas Edison- Albert Einstein- Robert Fulton- Louis Pasteur- James Watt- Robert Boyle- (make sure your Ind. Rev. Lesson Sheet is on your desk) Marie Curie- First and only scientist to win two Nobel Peace Prize in both Physics and Chemistry; her work in radioactivity and uranium Thomas Edison- Inventor of the light bulb Albert Einstein- Theory of Relativity; E=MC² Robert Fulton- Inventor of the steamboat Louis Pasteur-Pasteurized milk James Watt-Scottish inventor and engineer who brought improvements to the steam engine

Of course, one of the causes of Industrial Revolution was the…. The Scientific Revolution …..The discoveries in math, physics and mechanics were the foundation of the inventions that drove the Industrial Revolution. So …now…let’s see about these great scientists and inventions of the Industrial Revolution Era of history

Thomas Edison-light bulb, camera
Albert Einstein-Theory of relativity, father of modern physics Robert Fulton-inventer, first successful steam boat Louis Pasteur-vaccine for rabies, pasteurization( sterilization of food) James Watt-steam engine advancement Robert Boyle-founder of Modern Chemistry (working with metals, combustion, respiration, etc) …..and Marie Curie-2 Nobel Prizes, radioactivity Marie Curie- First and only scientist to win two Nobel Peace Prize in both Physics and Chemistry; her work in radioactivity and uranium Thomas Edison- Inventor of the light bulb Albert Einstein- Theory of Relativity; E=MC² Robert Fulton- Inventor of the steamboat Louis Pasteur-Pasteurized milk James Watt-Scottish inventor and engineer who brought improvements to the steam engine 3

A little about Marie Curie
Marie Skłodowska Curie was a physicist and chemist She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, the first person/woman honored with two Nobel Prizes, receiving one in physics and later, one in chemistry. She was the first woman to serve as professor at the University of Paris.. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. Her achievements include the creation of a theory of radioactivity (a term she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. Under her direction, the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasm (cancers), using radioactive isotopes. What is another important aspect of the use of radioactivity that is very important today and is all thanks to Marie? Hint: It gets used on a daily basis for safety measures????

Now let’s answer question 14 on your answer sheet before we move on…..

Overall, how is life different today because of the Industrial Revolution?
The world has become more interconnected through transportation and systems of communications mass-produced goods -computers, clothes, movies, medicines, and cars make for a higher standard of living More leisure time for participation in recreational sports, to attend movies, musicals and fairs, *Scientific advancement-insulin, penicillin, insecticides… *But…many people suffer hunger in part because food production geared for mass markets may ignore local needs, ….and pollution, overcrowded issues , menial jobs are still topics of issue today Have students list some of the innovations in communication that have changed over the last 5-10 years. Examples of scientific advances: insulin, penicillin, and insecticides Examples of transportation: air travel, trucks, cars etc.

So now that you have learned the topic of the Industrial Revolution…
So now that you have learned the topic of the Industrial Revolution…. Let’s reflect….. Before we move on…let’s answer #12
8
Now…pass up your Ind. Revolution Lesson Sheet…. And…Everyone turn to Pg. 647
As people moved to cities, economies and making money changed Some people actually wrote about what they thought would be best for the economies of cities and their countries. ******************* You should all be at Pg. 647… Section 4: An Age of Reforms: ***************************
9
So we have seen the positive and negatives of the Industrial Revolution…. We’ve seen how cities will change, and the issues that government will have to get involved in to fix, from child labor to pollution to building regulations to city protection and the first police ******************************* But what about the economy itself? Was the government involved in how the economy was ran? What ideas would the Industrial Revolution bring to the thought of economy and how it should be ran? Be successful? ****************************** Well….There were 2 big economic writers from the Industrial Revolution period of history….One thought that the government should stay out of the economy…the other thought it should be in charge of the economy for the betterment of the people as a whole.
10
Now you will get to know these 2 men and what their views were on economy and how they should be ran in a country…. Use Section 4, An Age of Reforms in your textbook to help you answer the questions …. ******************* (Pass out Economic Theories Lesson Sheet ) (NOTE: We will grade these tomorrow)
