1 Remembrance of Allah – How often and what are its virtues?

2 Allah has commanded that he be remembered a lot!
Allah says in the Quran: "Those who remember Allah standing, sitting and on their sides,'' [Qur'an 3.191] and “Those men and women who engage much in Allah's praise. For them has Allah prepared forgiveness and a great reward.'' [Qur'an 33.35] Ali b. Abi Talha relates that Ibn 'Abbas said, "All obligations imposed upon man by Allah are clearly marked and one is exempted from them in the presence of a genuine cause. The only exception is the obligation of zhikr. Allah has set no specific limits for it, and under no circumstances is one allowed to be negligent of it. We are commanded to 'remember Allah standing, sitting and reclining on your sides,' in the morning, during the day, at sea or on land, on journey or at home, in poverty and in prosperity, in sickness or in health, openly and secretly, and, in fact, at all times throughout one's life and in all circumstances."

3 Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet said that Allah has said:
“I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near Me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him. Also Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger was traveling along the path leading to Mecca that he happened to pass by a mountain called Jumdan. He said: Proceed on, it is Jumdan, Mufarradun have gone ahead. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: Allah's Messenger, who are Mufarradun? He said: They are those males and females who remember Allah much. [Sahih Muslim]

4 Remembering Allah is an intergral part of Worship of Him
Sa' id b. Jubair said, "Anyone engaged in obeying Allah is in fact engaged in the remembrance of Allah." Some of the earlier scholars tied it to some more specified form. 'Ata said, "The gatherings of zhikr are the gatherings where the lawful and the prohibited things are discussed, for instance, selling, buying, prayers, fasting, marriage, divorce, and pilgrimage." Al-Qurtubi said, "Gatherings of zhikr are the gatherings for knowledge and admonition, those in which the Word of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger, accounts of our righteous predecessors, and sayings of the righteous scholars are learned and practiced without any addition or innovation, and without any ulterior motives or greed." So thus whenever one studies or learns the deen this is a form of remembrance of Allah. As is reading the Quran in addition to praying, fasting and other forms of worship

5 The Purpose of Remembering Allah is to purify hearts and souls and awaken the human conscience
The Qur'an says, "And establish regular prayer, for prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds, and remembrance of Allah is the greatest thing in life, without doubt.'' [ ] In other words, the remembrance of Allah has a greater impact in restraining one from shameful and unjust deeds than just the formal regular prayer. This is so because when a servant opens up his soul to his Lord, seeking His praise, Allah strengthens him with His light, increasing thereby his faith and conviction, and reassuring his mind and heart. And as a result, the person who has remembered Allah will not give in to the temptation to sin. He instead finds satisfaction and joy is obeying his Lord. "Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah, for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction.'' [Qur'an 13.28]

6 Many Hadith illustrate this reality. For Example:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying that Allah thus stated: I live in the thought of My servant as he thinks of Me and with him as he calls Me. Abu Huraira reported Allah's Apostle as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: When My servant draws close to Me by the span of a palm, I draw close to him by the cubit and when he draws close to Me by the cubit, I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands, and when he draws close to Me by the space (covered) by two hands, I go in hurry towards him.

7 Our personal Jinn never ceases to tempt us to sin
Our personal Jinn never ceases to tempt us to sin. This is why the strongest weapon we have against him is each other because we remind one another to not forget. So remembering Allah in a gathering brings even more benefit to the Muslim Ibn 'Umar reported, "The Prophet said, 'When you pass by a garden of Paradise, avail yourselves of it.' The Companions asked, 'What are the gardens of Paradise, O Messenger of Allah? ' The Prophet replied, 'The gatherings or circles of zhikr. There are some angels of Allah who go about looking for such gatherings of zhikr, and when they find them they surround them'." Muslim reports that Mu'awiyyah said, "The Prophet went out to a gathering of his Companions and asked, 'What makes you sit here?' They said, 'We are sitting here in order to remember Allah and to praise Him because He guided us to the path of Islam and he conferred favors upon us.' Thereupon he adjured them by Allah and asked if that was the only purpose of their sitting there. 'They said, By Allah, we are sitting here for this purpose only. ' At this the Prophet said, 'I am not asking you to take an oath because of any misapprehension against you, but only because Gabriel came to me and informed me that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, was telling the angels that He is proud of you'."

8 Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet said:
"When any group of men remember Allah, angels surround them and mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him." Muslim reports Abu Huraira said that the Prophet Said: Allah has mobile (squads) of angels, who have no other work (to attend to but) to follow the gatherings of Dhikr and when they find such assemblies in which there is Dhikr (of Allah) they sit in them and some of them surround the others with their wings till the space between them and the sky of the world is fully covered, and when they disperse (after the assembly of Dhikr is adjourned) they go upward to the heaven and Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, asks them although He is best informed about them: Where have you come from? They say: We come from Thine servants upon the earth who had been glorifying Thee (reciting Subhan Allah), uttering Thine Greatness (saying Allah o-Akbar) and uttering Thine Oneness (La ilaha ill Allah) and praising Thee (uttering al-Hamdu Lillah) and begging of Thee. He would say : What do they beg of Me? They would say: They beg of Thee the Paradise of Thine. He (God) would say : Have they seen My Paradise ? They said : No, our Lord. He would say : (What it would be then) if they were to see Mine Paradise ? They (the angels) said : They seek Thine protection. He (the Lord) would say: Against what do they seek protection of Mine? They (the angels) would say: Our Lord, from the Hell-Fire. He (the Lord) would say: Have they seen My Fire? They would say: No. He (the Lord) would say: What it would be if they were to see My Fire ? They would say : They beg of Thee forgiveness. He would say: I grant pardon to them, and confer upon them what they ask for and grant them protection against which they seek protection. They (the angels) would again say: Our Lord, there is one amongst them such and such simple servant who happened to pass by (that assembly) and sat there along with them (who had been participating in that assembly). He (the Lord) would say: I also grant him pardon, for they are a people the seat-fellows of whom are in no way unfortunate.

9 So these are the virtues of Remembering Allah as often as one can
To remember him Alone – Allah will strengthen you with what you need to not only deal with whatever you are facing in life – but he will also cause you to not transgress his limits and fall into sin. Tomorrow we will discuss the Etiquette of remebering Allah
